Ambassador of Plan International Germany Erik Jaeger visited Hanoi and participated in activities to promote gender equality at the University of Transport and Phu Chau Secondary School in Ba Vi.

Through non-competitive sports activities, promoting gender equality,Jaeger joined with the Youth Advisory Board of Plan International Vietnam, students and students to call for the elimination of gender stereotypes to everyone has equal and healthy access to and participation in sports.

As a professional sports coach in Germany, Jaeger always encourages and urges people to practice sports with the motto that sport is for everyone, regardless of gender. He has been with Plan International Germany in many fundraising activities and calls for action to promote safe, inclusive and accessible sports spaces for all.

Jaeger participated in the workshop themed "Announcing the Process of Receiving, Handling and Supporting Victims of Harassment, Sexual Abuse and Gender-Based Violence" and the "Motivation of Change" workshop organized by Plan International, the Light Community Health Development Institute (LIGHT) and the Champions Of Change Club at the University of Transport and Communications on May 31.

Stemming from the need to have a set of procedures for receiving, handling and supporting victims of sexual harassment and abuse, towards the goal of building a safe school environment, the Safer Cities project of Plan International, in collaboration with LIGHT Institute and University of Transport, to develop a diagram on the process of receiving, handling and supporting victims of sexual harassment and abuse.

This will be the first step for the University of Transport to complete the process of receiving, handling and supporting victims of sexual harassment on campus.

Champions of Change Clubs are led by young people in elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universities across Vietnam. These Clubs use educational resources to explore the local to global connection of social justice issues through the lens of girls’ rights.

Through challenging activities, folk games, quizzes with prizes, seminars and camps aim to create a youthful, open and vibrant space to motivate young people to break the old-fashion gender roles, thereby creating motivation to promote gender equality and inspire the image of young people as leaders of change, breaking gender stereotypes, towards a better world.

This is also an opportunity for young people from participating universities to meet and exchange. get acquainted and share experiences in organizing clubs to promote gender equality in universities.

Tran Minh Quang, project coordinator of Safer Cities for Girls in Hanoi project, Plan International Vietnam, said that the Safer Cities project started to be implemented in Hanoi since 2014 with the goal of building a safer, more responsible and friendly city for all girls.

Through 5 years of implementation, they have reached 90,000 direct beneficiaries and 500,000 indirect beneficiaries. The project has successfully piloted interventions in Dong Anh district and with the bus system in Hanoi city.

The Girl-Friendly and Safe Cities model has been replicated in six provinces across the country to contribute to the safety of millions of girls in public places.

According to Pham Minh Hoang, chairman of University of Transport's Transport Club the Champions Of Change Club was established in 2018.

Through 4 generations of leaders, the 70 members and collaborators of the club have carried out many activities to achieve the goal of increasing the safety of girls in public places, increasing the freedom of movement and safety of girls in the city, enhancing their active and meaningful participation in the city's development.

Meanwhile, Jaeger was very excited about the challenges and advocacy games at the program as well as the creative ways to call for gender equality that the students have been implementing.

“Plan International is promoting equality for girls through projects in Hanoi. During this trip, I want to show all children, girls and boys alike, how important physical activity is to their health and the fight for gender equality."

Jaeger then visited Phu Chau Secondary School in Ba Vi on June 1 and participated in non-competitive sports activities with the school's students within the framework of the project "Sport Spaces for Safety and Equality in Hanoi Schools".

Erik Jaeger also gave students guidelines on sports and fitness that can be easily done either at home or school, joined sport activities, attended a learning session of the Champions of Change club and participated in a non-competitive football match with teachers, students and parents of Phu Chau secondary school, highlighting the motto “Count smiles, not goals”.

Principal Do Van Khai expressed satisfaction about the project's results, saying that it is a very humane project, of great significance, helping female and male students to equip life skills, participate in sports practice, and equality activities, towards comprehensive education.

“With the values brought, the project not only received the active participation of teachers and students, but also received the enthusiastic response of the students' parents and the community. We want the project to be maintained in schools in Ba Vi district and expand to all schools in Hanoi, as well as across the country,” Khai added.
