Spreading the Love for the Fatherland from the Sea and Islands

These heartfelt handwritten letters were sent to coincide with the 61st anniversary of the first victory of the Vietnam People’s Navy (August 2 and 5, 1964). The innocent, sincere handwriting of the students conveyed pure affection, deep respect, and profound gratitude to the officers and soldiers who are tirelessly safeguarding the sacred maritime and island sovereignty of the Fatherland. The children wrote with all their love and pride:

“I wish you good health and steady hands on your guns to protect our seas. I will always study hard so as not to disappoint you and to become the future of our country,” wrote Tran Ha My, a student from class 5A5.

Another moving line came from Nguyen Phuong Xuyen, class 5A6: “I sincerely thank you, soldiers, for sacrificing yourselves so that our country can live in peace, so that we can go to school and enjoy life as we do today.”

The handwritten letters overflow with emotion and affection from the students, sent to the military and civilians on Truong Sa Islands. Each letter not only contained messages of well-wishes and encouragement but was also adorned with cute, playful drawings, expressing the heartfelt sentiments of the children toward the soldiers serving in the maritime frontiers of the nation.

In today's fast-paced digital age, where information is transmitted in the blink of an eye, handwritten letters have become increasingly rare. Yet, for naval officers stationed in remote, wave-battered outposts, letters penned by children from the mainland remain invaluable gifts.

Carefully written lines on paper carry pure feelings and sincere warmth in every word. For those stationed far from home, each handwritten letter is a message of encouragement and an unexpected joy, representing the enduring bond between the rear and the front, where love for the Fatherland is conveyed in the simplest yet most meaningful ways.

At the letter handover event, Colonel Nguyen Xuan Dung, Deputy Chief of Politics of Naval Region 4, emotionally shared: “These letters are precious spiritual gifts, heartfelt messages, and powerful motivation for Truong Sa’s officers and soldiers to remain steadfast in their duties amid challenging conditions. Especially during the commemoration of the Navy’s first victory - a landmark marking the beginning of our proud tradition - we deeply appreciate the love the younger generation from the mainland extends to our seas and islands.”

The handwritten letters from the mainland are always cherished by naval soldiers, read over and over again. To the soldiers on remote islands, each letter is like a miniature homeland, carrying the affection of the children, the image of the motherland, and the spirit of the nation that always looks toward the sea. That is why these handwritten letters are treasured by the soldiers as some of the most beautiful memories in their journey of guarding the sacred sovereignty of the country.

The letters from Van Bao Primary School will accompany upcoming missions to Truong Sa, where they will be hand-delivered to officers, soldiers, and residents on the islands. These are not merely lines of writing, but the shared lifeblood of the nation, a continuation of the proud tradition of a “strong rear and resilient front line.”
