The nearly 800-page book consists of 12 chapters. It tells the story of important historical periods spanning from the 11th century to the beginning of the 21st century in terms of power changes, administrative reforms, and socio-cultural changes in the Upper and Northwestern regions of Vietnam.

The book author - Assoc. Prof. and historian Philippe Le Failler has 35 years of research on Vietnam, famous for many research works on Vietnamese history in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Since 2003, Philippe Le Failler has served as the Chief Representative of the French School of the Far East (EFEO) in Hanoi. He received his education at the University of Aix-en-Provence. His research began in 1986, focusing on colonial archives related to Indochina, specifically the monopolistic use of opium. He defended his PhD thesis on "The International Anti-Opium Movement and Indochina, 1906-1940" in 1993.

Later, Philippe Le Failler's research expanded to include the history of Vietnam's northwestern region and inter-ethnic relations in the country. His notable publications include “Cross-examinations of a Century of Scientific Curiosity”, and “The Architecture of Construction in Hanoi (1875-1945)” (co-authored with the Hanoi Museum).
