The visit takes place in the context of continued positive development in bilateral relations, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
Vietnam and India established diplomatic relations in 1972, elevated ties to a Strategic Partnership in 2007, and further upgraded them to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2016. In recent years, defense and security cooperation has remained a key, important, and strategic pillar. Economic and trade cooperation has recovered and developed positively following the pandemic.
According to data from the General Department of Customs, total bilateral trade turnover between Vietnam and India reached a record high of 16.46 billion USD in 2025, up 10.5% compared to 2024. Of this, Vietnam’s exports to India reached 10.3 billion USD, an increase of 14.2%, while imports from India stood at 6.1 billion USD, up 4.9%.
In terms of investment, according to Vietnam’s Foreign Investment Agency, India has 378 projects in Vietnam with total registered capital exceeding 1 billion USD. India’s main areas of investment include energy, mineral processing, agricultural product processing (coffee, tea, sugar), information technology, automobile components, pharmaceuticals, hotels, and infrastructure.
Conversely, according to India’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, as of 2022, Vietnam had invested approximately 28.55 million USD in sectors such as consumer goods, electronics, construction, information technology, and pharmaceuticals in India.
Cooperation in culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges continues to be strengthened and expanded. Connectivity between the two countries in both aviation and maritime sectors has been enhanced, with dozens of direct flights operating each week.
Immediately after Vietnam’s National Assembly elected General Secretary To Lam as State President on April 7, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a congratulatory message.
In his message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence that under the leadership of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam, the “time-tested” friendship between Vietnam and India will continue to grow ever stronger.
The Indian Prime Minister also expressed his hope that in the coming time, both sides will further strengthen cooperation to continue deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for progress and prosperity.
