Running from June 13 to July 15, the exhibition brings together 27 works by the three French photographers, Daniel Roussel, Gilbert Bertrand, and Lily Franey, whose photographic work has reflected a deep and enduring connection with Vietnam.
Daniel Roussel’s photographs offer a rare glimpse into life in Vietnam between 1980 and 1986. As the Vietnam correspondent for the daily newspaper L’Humanité, Roussel captured everyday moments across the country with great affection and admiration, reflecting his understanding of Vietnam’s struggle against colonialism and imperialism. Combined with his writing and documentary filmmaking, his photographic works form a valuable archive that celebrates Vietnam’s remarkable vitality in the post-war period.
The exhibition also features Gilbert Bertrand’s black-and-white photographs, taken between 1970 and 1975 while he was working at the French Cultural Center in Da Lat and Saigon.
Although not a professional photographer, Bertrand’s keen eye and deep passion for photography inspired him to document significant historical turning points. His works were never published at the time they were created, but they are now recognized for their photographic merit and enduring historical significance, helping to shed light on a remarkable chapter of Vietnam’s history.
The exhibition concludes with the evocative photographs of Lily Franey, taken from 1987 onward during her missions to Vietnam with the French humanitarian organization Secours populaire français. Her photographs portray a country emerging from the devastation of war, capturing simple scenes filled with hope.
Through a profoundly humanistic lens, Franey imbues her work with warmth and sensitivity, offering an authentic and vivid portrait of the resilience and everyday lives of the Vietnamese people during the period of reconstruction and renewal.
