Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh praised outgoing Australian Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski for his significant contributions to Vietnam-Australia relations during their meeting in Hanoi on December 27. He thanked Australia for its cooperation and support over the years, especially the provision of COVID-19 vaccines and human resources training.
Both leaders noted the progress in relations, including the upgrade to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and an Action Program for 2024–2027. Bilateral trade reached US$13.8 billion last year and US$13 billion by November 2024, a 2.9% increase compared to 2023. Australia has prioritized Vietnam in its Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, with 660 projects totaling US$2.05 billion by August 2024.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of high-level visits, people-to-people exchanges, and cooperation in tourism and education. He proposed expanding RMIT University in Vietnam and increasing scholarships for Vietnamese students.
Defense cooperation remains a highlight, with calls for further training, cyber security, peacekeeping, and addressing war legacy issues. He urged enhancing market access, removing trade barriers, and boosting Australian investments in Vietnam, as well as cooperation in digital transformation, green growth, and key industries like semiconductors, AI, and renewable energy.
Ambassador Goledzinowski committed to strengthening bilateral ties, praising rapid progress in recent years. He expressed optimism about Vietnam’s development policy and its potential as Asia’s next tiger.
