The decision is based on the recommendation of the Slovak Government Council on human rights, ethnic minorities, and gender equality, and opinions from experts in the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology under the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Accordingly, the Vietnamese community has met all criteria in "quantity," "has lived in Slovakia for nearly 70 years," and "the 3rd generation has fully integrated into society."

With the resolution of the Government of Slovakia, the Vietnamese community will be represented at the Committee on Ethnic Minorities and Ethnic Groups of the Council of the Government of the Slovak Republic on human rights, ethnic minorities, and gender equality. The Vietnamese community will be supported with financial resources from the Fund for Cultural Support of Ethnic Minorities. They will also have the right to comment on this fund.

The fact that the Slovak Government officially recognized the Vietnamese community as the 14th ethnic group is a clear demonstration of the Vietnamese' active role and ability to integrate into the host country. According to the Vietnamese Association in Slovakia, this event benefits the Vietnamese, helping to build a stronger community.

It is estimated that about 7,000 Vietnamese people are living and studying in Slovakia. The last time Slovakia recognized a community as an ethnic minority was 13 years ago (2010 for the Serb community).
