Switzerland To Support Can Tho City’s Sustainable Development
Ambassador Thomas Gass said this business trip to Can Tho city is to attend the Sustainable Development Workshop in the Mekong River Basin, recognize the impact of climate change, and listen to the city’s response strategy to climate change issues in the future. He will also review the coordination of activities from Swiss partners to help Can Tho’s sustainable development.
According to Ambassador Thomas Gass, Switzerland is an active member of the initiative to establish the Mekong River Commission. Through ongoing projects, Switzerland has supported downstream localities such as Can Tho to improve climate change adaptation for the city's core area.

Nguyen Thuc Hien informed the Ambassador that Can Tho City has received active support from Swiss partners such as the Dariu Foundation, and VMA Organization, among others, for non-governmental projects related to education and health.
Particularly for the ODA project, Can Tho also received support from Switzerland to implement Component 3 of the Can Tho City Development Project and enhance urban adaptability, funded by the Federal Department of Economic Affairs. The total capital of the funded project is 254 million USD.
Several projects have been completed, including the basic completion of protective embankments along the Can Tho River, and the Cai Son - Muong Khai embankment contributing to flood prevention for the urban core area.

Also, tidal culverts help prevent high tides from entering the inner city area during flood season. The completed projects of Quang Trung Bridge and Tran Hoang Na Street also help reduce traffic congestion and serve people's convenient travel needs.
Nguyen Thuc Hien expressed that during this working visit to Can Tho, Thomas Gass will pay attention and introduce Swiss partners and investors to support the city in projects to respond to climate change and develop high-tech agriculture.
At the same time, Ambassador Thomas Gass will express his thoughts on the issues of saline intrusion and landslides, especially about the dams upstream of the Mekong River that have negatively impacted the Mekong Delta, including Can Tho city.
In 2024, Can Tho is expected to organize a working delegation to visit and work with several partners in Switzerland and attend the Vietnam - Switzerland Economic Forum organized by the Vietnamese Embassy in Switzerland.
