This is the technological direction in which the Indian Army is now moving.
The Army has designated 2026 as the Year of Networking and Data Centricity, signalling a major emphasis on connecting platforms, sensors, personnel and information systems.
The initiative sits within a broader transformation programme in which the Army is exploring artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, 6G, high-performance computing, space-based systems and advanced unmanned platforms.
The result is an increasingly digital conception of military capability — one in which information itself becomes an essential operational resource.
Networking becomes core capability
The Army's decision to dedicate 2026 to networking and data-centricity reflects the growing importance of information flows in operations.
Its transformation framework emphasises internal networking, joint and inter-service connectivity, integration of platforms and sensors, data architecture, data governance, AI-enabled network management, cyber defence and AI-driven analytics.
The framework also envisages greater national networking and military-civil fusion.
The approach represents a shift from treating individual platforms as the centre of military capability towards connecting those platforms within a common information environment.
The Army Commanders' Conference in April also discussed technology infusion, alongside networking and data-centricity.
AI moves into operations
Artificial intelligence is emerging as another important pillar of the transformation.
A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence reported that a high-power computing AI cloud was being developed for use across the three armed services.
The committee also noted the Army's involvement in national technology missions and the establishment of technology clusters involving IITs and other research and development institutions.
The Army has also established an AI Incubation Centre in collaboration with Bharat Electronics Limited and has been working with IIT Madras on innovation.
This growing relationship between the military, academia, public-sector technology companies and start-ups is significant because many emerging defence technologies require expertise that extends beyond traditional research.
IIT Madras itself has expanded substantially as a deep-tech research and start-up ecosystem. During FY 2025-26, its incubation cell incubated 112 start-ups and filed 431 patents, while its overall portfolio crossed 500 start-ups.
Such academic and industrial capabilities create an expanding pool from which defence applications can emerge.
Quantum technology entering
Quantum technology is another area where India's defence transformation is moving from research towards institutional planning.
In January 2026, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan released the Military Quantum Mission Policy Framework, setting out a roadmap for incorporating quantum technologies across the armed forces.
The framework covers four broad areas: quantum communication, quantum computing, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices.
The framework is aligned with India's National Quantum Mission and emphasises joint efforts across the three services and wider government institutions.
For communications, quantum technologies have particular significance because secure communication is fundamental to network-centric operations. Quantum key distribution is among the areas in which the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering has been identified as a strategic partner.
The Army's participation in the wider quantum ecosystem demonstrates how military modernisation is increasingly linked to national technology missions.
6G opens another frontier
The Army's technology engagement also extends to next-generation communications.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence noted the Army's involvement in national technology missions ranging from 6G to the National Quantum Mission.
IITs and other research establishments are supporting technology conversion, with 16 technology clusters identified for specific responsibilities and outcomes.
The significance of 6G for defence extends beyond faster communication. Future military networks will require high levels of connectivity between sensors, platforms, command systems and autonomous technologies.
IIT Madras has already been working on 5G and 6G technologies as part of its deep-tech research portfolio. The institute showcased 5G/6G research alongside other advanced technologies at Bharat Innovates 2026 in France.
This creates a wider technology bridge between India's civilian communications research and future military applications.
Drones reshape systems
Unmanned systems have become one of the clearest symbols of the changing field.
The Army is consequently developing capabilities covering both unmanned aerial systems and counter-unmanned aerial systems.
Indigenous procurement accelerates
Digital transformation is advancing alongside a significant expansion in indigenous procurement.
According to the Parliamentary Standing Committee's assessment, the Army signed 479 capital acquisition contracts between FY 2020-21 and FY 2024-25, along with contracts during FY 2025-26 up to December 2025.
Of these, 419 contracts, accounting for about 91 percent of the total contract value, were signed with Indian vendors.
Indigenous procurement expenditure for Army equipment increased from $2 billion (₹17,446.83 crore) in FY 2020-21 to $2.4 billion (₹20,853.41 crore) in FY 2025-26 up to December.
The budgetary direction has also remained strongly focused on domestic sources.
For FY 2025-26, $2.5 billion (₹22,600 crore), or 86 percent of the Army's $2.9 billion (₹26,100 crore) capital acquisition allocation, was earmarked for indigenous procurement.
For FY 2026-27, $3 billion (₹28,909 crore) out of a total capital acquisition allocation of $3.63 billion (₹34,150 crore) was proposed for domestic procurement, representing 84 percent.
The figures underline how technology modernisation and indigenisation are increasingly progressing together.
Ammunition joins digital shift
The transformation is not confined to sophisticated digital systems.
This is significant because a future-ready force requires both advanced digital capabilities and reliable access to conventional ammunition and equipment.
The combination of locally developed drones, precision tools, surveillance equipment and networked command structures points towards a broader modernisation model.
Three services share infrastructure
An important feature of the current transformation is the movement towards common technological infrastructure across the armed forces.
The proposed high-power computing AI cloud is intended for all three services, while the Military Quantum Mission Policy Framework explicitly seeks greater synergy among the Army, Navy and Air Force.
The Defence Information Technology Consultative Committee has also been examining advanced chip manufacturing, sovereign operating systems and databases, and strategic data-centre locations for defence requirements.
The June 2026 meeting included representatives from the Integrated Defence Staff, the three services, DRDO, MeitY, academia and industry.
This indicates that defence digitisation is increasingly being approached as a national technology ecosystem rather than as separate service-level projects.
A new architecture
The Indian Army's transformation is consequently taking shape across several interconnected layers.
Networks provide the connectivity. Data provides the information base. Artificial intelligence can help analyse that information.
Quantum technologies are being developed for future communications, sensing and computing. Drones extend surveillance and operational reach, while counter-drone systems add another layer of protection.
Underlying all of this is the continuing push towards indigenous development and procurement.
More than 300 capability schemes are planned over the next decade, according to the Parliamentary Standing Committee's assessment. The Army's technology agenda is therefore being pursued as a long-term programme rather than a collection of isolated projects.
The designation of 2026 as the Year of Networking and Data Centricity gives that transformation a clear institutional focus.
India's Army is still built around soldiers, artillery, armoured vehicles and conventional weapons. But increasingly, those platforms are being connected to a much larger digital architecture.
The future will depend not only on what a force possesses, but also on how quickly its sensors, networks, commanders and weapons can work together.
India's current military modernisation effort shows that this transformation is already moving from concept to capability — linking indigenous defence production with artificial intelligence, quantum technology, advanced communications and unmanned systems to create a more connected force for the next generation.
