Three Vietnamese Police Officers Honored by UNMISS

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on October 4 presented UN peacekeeping orders to three officers from the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security who are participating in the UN peacekeeping mission in the African country. VNA reported.

The honored officers are Colonel Le Quoc Huy, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Vu Viet Hung and Lieutenant Colonel Luong Thi Tra Vinh, who have shown outstanding performance in UN peacekeeping operations.

Addressing the event, UN Police Chief of Staff for UNMISS Murat Isik acknowledged and highly evaluated the contributions the Vietnamese police officers have made to activities of the mission, affirming that they have always shown professionalism, good discipline, high efficiency and high sense of responsibility.

He proposed the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security send more officers to UNMISS in the coming time.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Egypt and South Sudan Nguyen Huy Dung recognized the outstanding performance of the three peacekeepers who are the first officers sent by the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security to UNMISS.

Along with performing their international mission, they have acted as “cultural ambassadors” to promote the culture and image of the people and a peace-loving, humane and responsible Vietnam to international friends, he said.

The diplomat said he hoped the officers will continue to work hard and overcome difficulties to complete their tasks.

The Ministry of Public Security’s working group was deployed to UNMISS in October 2022.

All have excellently fulfilled their duties; gradually affirmed the capacity, mettle, professionalism of the People’s Public Security officers; and helped popularise images of Vietnam to the UN and international friends.

The order is a noble award from the UN to honor and recognize each individual's contributions to UN peacekeeping activities.

According to UN regulations, after serving at UNMISS for 6 months or more, if they successfully complete their duties and do not violate discipline, officers will be awarded the UN Peacekeeping Order. For each individual and the peacekeeping police force of each country at the UNMISS Mission, receiving the UN Peacekeeping Medal is a particularly important event. The ceremony is also an opportunity for countries to organize promotional activities, introduce their country, people and culture, as well as strengthen relations with the UN and other countries.

On August 12, 2023, President Vo Van Thuong signed a decision to send three other police officers to perform UN peacekeeping mission at UNMISS.

The three are Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen My Hanh, and Captain Pham Thi Mai Ngan, who will work at UNISFA, and Major Hoang Van Kien, who will go to UNMISS.

So far, Vietnam has deployed seven police officers to UN peacekeeping operations, including six to UNMISS and one to the UN headquarters. 786 officers were deployed to the UN peacekeeping missions in Abyei, Central African Republic and South Sudan, and the UN Headquarters.
