According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration, the UK’s Lloyd’s List magazine has just released the 2025 ranking of the world’s top 100 container ports by cargo throughput. Notably, three Vietnamese seaports made it onto the list: Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, and Cai Mep.
Specifically, Ho Chi Minh City Port ranked 22nd, with throughput in 2024 reaching over 9.1 million TEUs, up 23.8% compared to 2023. With this result, the port moved up three places from its 2024 ranking.

Hai Phong Port secured the 29th position (up four places from 2024), handling around 7.1 million TEUs in 2024, a 12.8% increase compared to 2023.
Meanwhile, with more than 7 million TEUs handled in 2024 (a 29.2% increase compared to 2023), Cai Mep Port rose to 30th place, climbing four spots from its 2023 ranking.
According to Lloyd’s List, Vietnam’s maritime sector has experienced a sharp surge in cargo throughput over the past year, largely driven by the impact of US-China trade tensions, which have prompted many investors and shipping lines to diversify their supply chains across Southeast Asia.
The report indicates that the total throughput across the world’s top 100 container ports reached 743.6 million TEUs, representing an 8.1% increase compared to the previous year. Vietnam, together with India and Turkey, has emerged as a key beneficiary of supply chain restructuring and regional trade agreements.
Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, and Cai Mep are also Vietnam’s three largest seaports, classified as “special-category” ports. Among them, Hai Phong and Cai Mep have been designated as international gateway ports with transshipment functions, capable of accommodating large container vessels. This enables more efficient cargo handling and helps reduce logistics costs.
Recently, these three ports were also listed among the world’s top 50 busiest container ports in 2024, according to DynaLiners Millionaires. Their strong performance placed Vietnam sixth among countries with the highest container throughput.
In the ranking of the world’s top 100 container ports by cargo throughput, Asia continues to maintain its dominant position. Notably, Chinese ports alone account for more than 40% of global container volume. Singapore Port ranks second with over 41.1 million TEUs, reaffirming its status as the world’s leading transshipment hub.
Lloyd’s List is a maritime-focused news publication and one of the oldest newspapers in the world, with a history of more than 300 years. It provides information, in-depth analysis, and industry reports on global shipping for professionals and insurers in the sector.
