In a message to countries and people worldwide celebrating the Lunar New Year, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed hope that the Year of the Snake—symbolizing wisdom, resilience, and innovation—will bring humanity good health, happiness, prosperity, and new opportunities.

As the new year begins, Guterres emphasized that in 2025, countries must strive to create a safer world by drastically reducing emissions and supporting the transition to a renewable future. He urged the international community to strengthen its commitment to working together for peace, equity, and justice, with the determination to create a better future for all.

“Happy Lunar New Year. I am pleased to extend my warmest wishes to all who are celebrating the Lunar New Year – and this Year of the Snake. The snake represents wisdom, resilience, and renewal. In challenging times, let us be guided by these qualities and renew our commitment to peace, equality, and justice. Let us embrace this time of new beginnings with hope and determination to create a better future for all. May the Year of the Snake bring health, happiness, prosperity, and new opportunities. Thank you,” said Secretary-General Guterres in his New Year greeting video.

On December 22, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution officially recognizing Lunar New Year as a United Nations public holiday. The resolution emphasizes that Lunar New Year is celebrated in many member states and encourages UN agencies not to hold meetings on the first day of the Lunar New Year. Previously, on December 5, 2024, Lunar New Year was officially included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
