In her opening remarks, Sima Sami Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, emphasized that the organization will continue to play a leading role in promoting the rights of women and girls, viewing them not only as beneficiaries of protection but also as agents of sustainable peacebuilding. She highlighted three key priorities of the Strategic Plan: strengthening the legal framework on gender equality; enhancing institutional accountability through greater resources and data; and expanding women’s leadership and access to opportunities.
Ambassador Do Hung Viet emphasized that, with limited time left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, UN Women’s Strategic Plan 2026 - 2029 holds significant meaning in reaffirming the global commitment to gender equality. He stressed that implementation of the plan should adopt a development-centered approach, respect each country’s sovereignty, and align with their priorities, capacities, as well as cultural and historical contexts, while also being linked to the ongoing UN development system reform.
The Ambassador particularly underscored the need to close the digital divide and promote women’s leadership in the digital economy and AI governance - emerging fields that are shaping the future of global development. He reaffirmed that Vietnam will continue to work alongside UN Women, member states, and partners to ensure that no woman or girl is left behind.
On this occasion, Ambassador Do Hung Viet extended his congratulations to Sima Bahous on her reappointment as Executive Director of UN Women, and expressed gratitude for the agency’s active support to Vietnam in recent years, particularly its cooperation in developing and adopting the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security in 2024.
