Venerable Thich Vien Minh, vice president of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, donated US$20,000 in medical support to Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

In order to strengthen the traditional friendship between Vietnamese Buddhism and Sri Lankan Buddhism, the Vietnamese and Sri Lankan people, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha delegation led by Venerable Thich Duc Thien, Vice President of the Vietnam-Sri Lanka Friendship Association visited Sri Lanka and Buddhism in Sri Lanka from May 8-11.

At the meetings, the two sides appreciate the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Sri Lanka. They agreed to further promote people-to-people exchanges, cultural and Buddhist cooperation between the two countries.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena appreciates Vietnam's achievements in national construction and development. He said the two countries always supported each other during the independence struggle as well as the present.

Dinesh Gunawardena said that Sri Lankans admired the leadership talent of President Ho Chi Minh, who led Vietnam to achieve national independence. Sri Lanka is also one of the countries that soon established diplomatic relations with Vietnam.

The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka acknowledged and the help of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, the Vietnam-Sri Lanka Friendship Association, the Vietnamese people as well as the community in Sri Lanka. They carry out practical activities to support the people of Sri Lanka to overcome difficulties in recent years.

Dinesh Gunawardena said that the Sri Lankan government and ministries will continue to accompany, support and create favorable conditions for the operation of the Embassy and the Vietnamese community, including Vietnamese monks and nuns studying in Sri Lanka.

Regarding the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Ali Sabry hoped that the Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha would pay attention to promoting the relationship between temples and pagodas of the two countries, as well as strengthening the development of Buddhist tourism.

He believes that this is one of the factors that helps to enhance understanding and contribute to the economic development of the two countries.

The delegation worked with the Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs.

Speaking at the meetings, Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien thanked the Sri Lankan leaders for welcoming the delegation. He said that Vietnam always attaches importance to cooperation with Sri Lanka, makes efforts to promote the two countries' cooperation, including cooperation in the field of Buddhism.

The Most Venerable appreciates the affection of the leaders and people of Sri Lanka for President Ho Chi Minh, the country and the people of Vietnam. He said that the relationship between the two countries has many similarities in the history of the struggle for independence, the nation as well as a long association with Buddhism.

The delegation worked with the Minister and Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka.

For Buddhist cooperation activities, he agreed with the idea of ​​promoting cooperation between temples and pagodas of the two countries, exchanging broadcasts between Buddhist TV channels of the two sides as well as enhancing tourism.

Besides Buddhist cooperation activities, as Vice President of the Vietnam-Sri Lanka Friendship Association, the Most Venerable made an effort to promote people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, strengthen friendship and mutual understanding.

Within the framework of the visit, at the meeting with the Prime Minister, the delegation donated US$20,000 to support the people of Sri Lanka to buy medical supplies.
