For the first time, two bowel transplants have been carried out successfully in Vietnam, making it become the 20th country in the world that can perform such complicated organ surgery.

The operations were performed on October 27 -28 by doctors of Hanoi-based Military Hospital 103 and their colleague from Japan’s Tohoku University Hospital, Academy Director Prof. Dr. Do Quyet announced in Hanoi on October 31.

The first patient, a 42-year-old man, received a healthy bowel from his younger brother, 40, while the second patient, Lo Van T., 26, got a bowel from his mother, 47.

Both patients had suffered from impaired bowel function following surgery years ago and they were required to undergo surgery.

After surgery, both bowel donors are in stable health condition. The two transplanted patients are under intensive care with their survival indicators being closely monitored by doctors, VOV reported.

Acting Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long on October 31 sent a letter of congratulation to the medical team, saying the success demonstrates the professional capacity of Vietnamese doctors in performing complicated and difficult surgery.

Earlier, for the first time in its history, doctors at Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi successfully carried out 23 organ transplants within 13 days.

Three heart, four liver and 16 kidney transplants were performed between August 30 and September 12.

The hospital said all the patients who received the new organs are recovering well following surgery.

Many of the live transplants were conducted on relatives of patients needing new organs.

Former director of the hospital Nguyen Tien Quyet said that cost for organ transplant in Vietnam was one third of those conducted in other countries in the region and in the world.

As Vietnamese surgeons have now mastered techniques, medical costs are reasonable. It is expected more people would be willing to donate organs to save lives, Quyet was quoted by Viet Nam News as saying./.
