Many years ago, Vang Thi Do, from Din Lanh village in Muong La district of Son La province was tricked and sold to the other side of the border.

After being discovered by the authorities of the host country, she was sent back to Vietnam.

Vang Thi Do is one of the luckier cases compared to other women in Son La who were sold across the border, as she was able to return to her family and village.

Chieng Dong has 17 villages with 1,022 households and over 5,600 people. People's economy mainly depends on agriculture and self-sufficiency; the people's intellectual level is still limited, especially the knowledge of the law is still low. Lau A Say, vice chairman of Chieng Dong Commune People's Committee said: Two years ago in Chieng Dong commune, Muong La district, Son La province, many people became victims of human trafficking crimes.

The reason was because they believed those who said they could have a comfortable life and a job with a high salary, and not have to work in the fields or work as hard as in their hometown.

With human trafficking crimes in the area being complicated, infringing on basic human rights, the Son La provincial police has focused establish working groups to coordinate with local government committees to grasp the situation.

They organize legal education so that people can understand the tricks of human trafficking crimes, thereby raising the spirit of vigilance and promptly informing competent forces.

Major Nguyen Van Thuy, Muong La district police, said: "Human trafficking criminals in Son La operate with increasingly sophisticated and complex methods and tricks."

"They colluded to form organizations, take advantage of social networking sites to search and deceive victims in difficult economic circumstances that have a lack of understanding of society and life skills."

To eliminate this type of crime from social life, especially in ethnic minority areas, border areas, Son La police force has implemented many measures, linking prevention work with promotion and legal education for local people.

During the period 2016-2020, Muong La district police successfully handled five cases involving six subjects of human trafficking. A further eight victims escaped by themselves and returned to the locality.

Therefore, in order to thoroughly eliminate this type of crime from social life, especially in ethnic minority areas and border areas, Son La police force has recently implemented many synchronous measures, linking prevention work with propaganda, dissemination and education of the law to the people. During the period 2016-2020, Muong La district police successfully dismantled 5 cases with 6 subjects of human trafficking, 8 victims escaped by themselves and returned to the locality.

Aware of the danger of this type of crime, each citizen needs to raise their own awareness, and be wary of tricks of traffickers.

In addition, it is necessary to have policies to support job creation, poverty alleviation, andincrease income through vocational training, and provide loans to women and girls who are at high risk of becoming victims of human trafficking.

Supporting people to have a stable economic life, jobs, and income is necessary so that they can meet their basic living needs.
