Vietnam Promotes Dialogue, Seeks Substantive Solutions at 11th NPT Review Conference

During his meeting with Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavan Phomvihane, both sides noted that Vietnam-Laos relations continue to develop in a substantive manner. They agreed to further specify the content of their strategic alignment across various sectors and effectively implement the cooperation agreement between the two foreign ministries for the 2026-2030 period. The two sides also agreed to maintain annual cooperation mechanisms, coordinate at international forums, and prepare for activities marking the Vietnam-Laos and Laos-Vietnam Friendship and Solidarity Year starting in early 2027.

In discussions with Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister Le Hoai Trung emphasized that Vietnam attaches importance to its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Thailand. Both sides agreed to prepare activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Thailand diplomatic relations in 2026, promote high-level exchanges, and soon finalize the Action Program for the 2026-2030 period to effectively implement their bilateral cooperation framework.

With European partners, Minister Le Hoai Trung held bilateral meetings with Vice President of the European Commission and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, as well as foreign affairs leaders of Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Lithuania, Austria, Germany, and Poland. At these meetings, the Minister affirmed that Vietnam is a reliable partner, ready to expand multifaceted cooperation with the EU, and proposed that partners enhance delegation exchanges and promote cooperation in economy, trade, investment, education, labor, innovation, digital transformation, and high technology.

Vietnam called on the remaining EU member states to soon complete ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement, acknowledged Vietnam’s efforts in combating IUU fishing, and urged the early removal of the “yellow card” on Vietnamese seafood as well as Vietnam’s removal from the list of non-cooperative tax jurisdictions. EU partners highly appreciated Vietnam’s dynamic development, affirmed that Vietnam is one of their priority partners in Southeast Asia, and expressed their interest in participating in infrastructure, renewable energy, green technology, and sustainable development projects in Vietnam.

In addition to bilateral activities, at the 25th ASEAN-EU Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Vietnam continued to affirm its active role in promoting cooperation between the two regions. Minister Le Hoai Trung emphasized that ASEAN and the EU share many strategic interests and should strengthen dialogue, coordinate responses to common challenges, and expand into new areas of cooperation. These include moving toward an interregional free trade agreement, implementing the ASEAN-EU Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement, and adopting the ASEAN-EU Digital Trade Rules by 2026.

On this occasion, Minister Le Hoai Trung also visited and presented a Vietnamese-language bookcase to the National University of Brunei. This activity contributes to promoting cultural exchanges, enhancing mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries, and implementing the Vietnam-Brunei Darussalam Comprehensive Partnership Action Plan for the 2023-2027 period.
