Vietnamese Students To Compete At VEX Robotics World Championship

The National VEX IQ Robotics Championship 2023, hosted by STEAM for Vietnam, the American Center in Vietnam and Hanoi University of Science and Technology, successfully selected 19 teams representing Vietnam in the upcoming VEX Robotics World Championship 2023 in Texas (US).

Vietnam's National VEX IQ Robotics Championship 2023 took place for two consecutive days over the weekend of Feb 25-26, with 143 teams competing in a total of 1,800 matches. The players are from more than 170 primary and secondary schools in 33 provinces across the country. The event has attracted nearly 2,000 audiences at the stadium of Hanoi University of Sciences and Technology and 20,000 viewers via the online platform.

The winners of the Excellence Award, the highest award at the national championship, are Team 15167A - SWITCH (Hanoi) of the Primary school league; and Team 60752G - MISSION POSSIBLE (Hanoi) of Secondary school league. Team 15167A - SWITCH (Hanoi) also won the Teamwork Champion Award.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Championship, US Deputy Ambassador to Vietnam Melissa Bishop emphasized the important role of education cooperation in strengthening Vietnam-US relations.

"Our relationship has spread to so many different areas, not only trade and economics but to education and cultural exchanges. This is the first year that Vietnam will have representatives participating in the tournament in the United States. It is important to bring young Vietnamese and American students together, especially when the Vietnamese students can compete in the United States. It makes our partnership stronger and will help us elevate the relationship to a strategic partnership," said the US Deputy Ambassador to Vietnam.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership. The US Mission to Vietnam committed to strengthen the cooperation with Vietnamese partner in the fields of science and technology education and training. The US Deputy Ambassador to Vietnam hoped that this Championship will help Vietnamese young talents to explore their creativity and the integration of natural sciences into technology, engineering, mathematics.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, co-founder of STEAM for Vietnam, Dr. Tran Viet Hung stressed that the Vietnamese teams worked hard to be qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship. This will inspire the young generation of the "can do" mindset, also to encourage more children to study designing and programming and engineering, making their first steps to become future engineers.

Notably, STEAM for Vietnam, the American Center (under the US Embassy and Consulate in Vietnam) and Hanoi University of Science and Technology will continue to support the Vietnamese teams in the upcoming VEX Robotics World Championship 2023 in Texas. The teams will receive sponsorships as well as training to improve robotics skills, social and communication skills.
