Vietnamese tend to favor eating at home due to COVID-19

Vietnamese are unlikely to go back to their old habits of frequently dining out, and will instead prefer takeaways and eating at home once life goes back to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a study by Nielsen.

The Nielsen survey has found 62 percent of Vietnamese admitting they would eat at home a lot more than after the Covid-19 crisis passes, instead of eating out. Another 26 percent of Vietnamese respondents said they would continue eating at home the same as before.

“Consumer across Asia have signalled their eating habits may change permanently once the world moves beyond the impact of the novel coronavirus,” the survey found. Over 6,000 respondents in 11 markets – China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia – were polled.

In China, 86 per cent of those polled said they would eat at home more often than before the outbreak, followed by 77 per cent in Hong Kong. In South Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam that number stood at 62 per cent. This shows consumer behaviour has moved from “on-the-go lifestyle” to a more “safe in-home consumption” trend, reported by South China Morning Post.

The survey also found 17 percent of Vietnamese respondents would order more takeaways after the Covid-19 pandemic ends while 25 percent would stick to earlier habits. 33 percent of the Vietnamese respondents said they would choose home delivery a lot more after the pandemic instead of eating out as before.

Eating out is no longer normal these days in Vietnam, with the government announcing a 15-day social distancing campaign, urging all people to stay at home until April 15 and banning the gathering of crowds of more than two people. Many restaurants have been closed, and even street food stalls only provide takeaways, according to VnExpress.
