Carter’s winning moments

Carter ended up scoring the most votes from American viewers after the singer gave two moving finale performances. First, he won fans over with his powerful rendition of Miley Cyrus's "The Climb." Surprising everyone, Carter then chose to sing his own original song called "Up From Here."

In order to win the competition, Carter had to beat out his fellow equally gifted finalists Desz (from Team Kelly), John Holiday (from Team Legend), Jim Ranger (from Team Blake), and Ian Flanigan (from Team Blake), who all gave stunning performances this past Monday night, according to Good House Keeping.

The very first time Carter walked on stage, both John Legend and Gwen Stefani knew he had star potential. In his blind audition, Carter ultimately picked Gwen as his mentor after both coaches begged him to join their teams. From then on, Gwen continued to picked Carter to advance in the battle and knockout rounds. In the live shows, at-home audiences proved furthermore with their own votes that they loved Carter's talent as much as Gwen did.

When Carter was named the winner of The Voice by host Carson Daly, the artist's fans at home couldn't contain their excitement online. "Congratulations on the win!! Carter has been a favorite since. The beginning!!! He is so talented to be so young!!" one viewer tweeted. "Way to go GWEN! Carter is phenomenal!!!," another said.

The 15-year-old Long Island, New York native became the youngest male winner ever. Rubin once said he would “have been happy with the chair turn,” but now he has a shining “Voice” trophy.

When his name was called, a speechless Rubin buried his face in his hands as confetti poured over the stage. A triumphant Stefani joined her champion while repeatedly yelling, "You won!" Rubin shook his head in disbelief.

Stefani visibly wanted to share the moment and embrace Rubin. She could be heard asking, "I can't hug him?" But due to COVID-19 guidelines, the pair had to maintain a social distance even while celebrating.

"We're trying to understand what is happening right now and we aren't even supposed to be close to each other," Stefani said in a Twitter video with Rubin afterwards.

Rubin first started his “Voice” journey at 14. He earned two chair turns from Stefani and John Legend during his piercing rendition of Lewis Capaldi's "Before You Go.”

The two-hour season finale felt like a concert, with more than a dozen guest performances and post-competition duets with the Top 5 and their coaches, USA Today reported.

1. Carter stunned the coaches in the blind auditions.

Carter performed the Lewis Capaldi song “Before You Go” for his blind audition. At the time of his audition, Carter was only 14 years old. After hearing his amazing voice, Gwen, 51, and John Legend, 41, were the coaches to turn around in hopes of nabbing Carter. 2. Gwen Stefani pledged to be a “mom figure” for Carter. When making the case for why he should be on her team, Gwen told Carter: “My son, he’s 14 years old, so I could be like a mom figure for you because I am a mom so you could feel very comfortable around me,” she said. “I loved your voice. When you got into your real full, full voice, the tone was so beautiful, it was shocking to me.” He ended up choosing Gwen as his coach!

3. He started his Instagram account when he auditioned for The Voice

Carter, who hails from Shoreham, New York, posted for the first time on his Instagram account in early October. “The secret’s out: I AUDITIONED FOR @nbcthevoice who’s ready for the season premiere on october 19? #TheVoice,” he wrote. Since his Instagram journey began, Carter has amassed over 27,000 followers.

4. His brother has autism.

While talking with the coaches after his blind auditions, Carter’s dad, brother, and grandfather got to be a part of this incredible moment virtually. Carter revealed that his brother was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 and gushed over their amazing “bond.” During the semi-finals, Carter dedicated his performance of “Rainbow Connection” from The Muppets Movie to his brother.

5. Carter’s grandfather is a musician.

Carter comes from a musical family, although the singing skipped a generation. His grandfather Ric Mango was a guitarist and backup vocalist for the band Jay and the Americans in the 1960s. “I think I got the singing gene from him,” Carter said.

Carter told the coaches he “couldn’t do this without my family.” His mom accompanied him to his audition, and his grandfather, father, and brother said hello to the coaches via video chat.

6. Carter is already thinking about his first album.

Artists like Harry Styles, Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran, and Lewis Capaldi have influenced him in a major way. “They have definitely inspired some of my songwriting,” Carter told HollywoodLife and other reporters. “I want to get in the studio and record that and put it in front of people to hear because I take music very, very seriously, and I go off of those famous people that really have inspired me to find my own genre and style of music. So that is what I want my album to sound like.”

7. He’s faced bullying at school.

For his Knockouts performance, Carter Rubin chose to sing “You Say” by Lauren Daigle, which he related to his own experience. He said kids at school have picked on him for being different.

“Being a 14-year-old boy in middle school-slash-high school that sings, not very athletic… most boys my age their voices have already dropped down,” Carter said. “So I have been picked on by other kids for being this different, unique individual.”
