Free reconstructive surgery for children with disabilities

During a humanitarian medical screening jointly organized by the Nghe An Provincial Child Protection Fund and Hoan My Vinh Hospital at a school, the family of Phung Van Bao (5 years old, from Do Luong District (former), Nghe An Province) learned for the first time that he had hydrocele. Previously, due to difficult circumstances, regular health monitoring of the children had been almost interrupted. With timely support from Zhi Shan, the Child Protection Fund and Hoan My Vinh Hospital, the free surgery enabled Bao to receive prompt intervention and stabilize his health.

Also in Nghe An, Phuong Nga (Kim Nhan Hamlet, Anh Son Commune, Nghe An Province), who has autism, was taken by her mother on a journey of more than 300 km each week to attend therapy at the Interaction and Rehabilitation Center under the Nghe An Provincial Child Protection Fund. At that time, Nga was nearly four years old, unable to speak, unable to recognize familiar objects, and frequently cried, screamed and ran uncontrollably. After nearly two years of intervention, she has been able to communicate simply, recognize surrounding objects and attend an inclusive class.

Cases such as Phung Van Bao and Phuong Nga are part of the activities supporting children with disabilities, autism and developmental disorders implemented by Zhi Shan Foundation in Vietnam in 2025.

According to Zhi Shan Foundation, from June to September 2025, in coordination with the Social Work and Vocational Education Center for Persons with Disabilities of Ha Tinh Province and the Nghe An Provincial Child Protection Fund, and through services provided by Hoan My Vinh Hospital and E Hospital Hanoi, the organization conducted free reconstructive surgery for 60 children with disabilities in Ha Tinh and Nghe An provinces.

All costs for surgery, accommodation, travel and powdered milk for the children were covered by the project, helping to reduce the burden on families during treatment.

Post-operative follow-up continued to be carried out regularly. In February 2025, the project followed up on 41 of 51 children who had undergone surgery in 2024, achieving a rate of 80%. The results showed that 95% of the children had good or fairly good outcomes, while 5% showed slow or unclear improvement. On that basis, Zhi Shan continued to support six children requiring additional intervention to enhance treatment and rehabilitation effectiveness.

Therapy for children with autism and developmental disorders

Alongside surgical activities, Zhi Shan Foundation maintained support for children with autism and developmental disorders through two Interaction and Rehabilitation Centers in Ha Tinh and Nghe An.

From 2022 to the present, the centers have been improved in terms of facilities, equipment and therapeutic toys. In January 2025 alone, the project provided nearly 49 million VND to supplement desks, chairs, shelves and outdoor toys for the Interaction and Rehabilitation Center of Nghe An Province.

In addition, Zhi Shan focused on enhancing the professional capacity of teachers and therapists through training courses on modern intervention methods, including augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).

Currently, the two centers receive about 60 children each day with various conditions such as autism, intellectual developmental delay, hyperactivity, language and behavioral disorders, who receive individual and group interventions to improve communication, motor skills and cognition.

Preparing a maternal and newborn health care project in Hue

In 2025, Zhi Shan Foundation conducted surveys, research and development of the project “Improving the quality of health care and nutrition for mothers and newborns in Hue City”.

The project aims to support disadvantaged pregnant women in receiving regular prenatal checkups, improving access to essential medical and nutritional services, and enhancing knowledge and skills in newborn care at the community level. Based on preparation work, the project is expected to be officially implemented from 2026.

After 25 years of operation in Vietnam, Zhi Shan Foundation has supported 3,343 children with disabilities with surgery, care and rehabilitation. Its activities continue to be implemented in a comprehensive manner, combining medical intervention, developmental therapy and primary health care for disadvantaged mothers and children.
