In the Viet Bac resistance base, on November 17, 1950, President Ho Chi Minh sent a letter to Congress to establish the Vietnam World Peace Protection Committee, the first multilateral people-to-people foreign affairs organization of Vietnam, the predecessor of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations.
Two days later, on November 19, 1950, the Congress was solemnly held in Roong Khoa village, Diem Mac commune, Dinh Hoa district, Thai Nguyen province. The Congress honored President Ho Chi Minh as the foremost peace fighter of Vietnam. It elected Ton Duc Thang as the Honorary Chairman of the Committee and elected the Committee's leadership.
The Committee's mission is to engage in the global struggle for peace, garnering sympathy, support, solidarity, and cooperation from progressive individuals worldwide for our people's cause of national liberation, construction, and protection of the Fatherland.
On December 3, 2008, in Notice No. 204-TB/TW, the Secretariat of the 10th Party Central Committee designated November 17, 1950, as the Traditional Day of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations.

Over the past 70 years, the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations has operated under the leadership of the Party, thoroughly implementing President Ho Chi Minh's ideology of making more friends and fewer enemies, uniting for the true interests of the Vietnamese people and the people of the world.
The Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations and its member organizations, alongside the nationwide people-to-people foreign affairs forces, have significantly contributed to mobilizing global support for the Vietnamese people during their struggle for national independence and reunification. The Union has also played a vital role in breaking the siege and embargo, as well as in the efforts of renovation, construction, and protection of the Fatherland. This has contributed to consolidating peace and enhancing friendship and cooperation between the Vietnamese people and people from other countries worldwide.
