Activities Held in Ha Noi, HCMC to Mark Victory Day of Soviet people in Great Patriotic War

Many activities marking the 81st anniversary of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet people (May 9, 1945 - May 9, 2026) took place in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City on May 7, highlighting the significance of peace, historical memory, and the friendship between Viet Nam and the Russian Federation.

On May 7 in Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations held a gathering to commemorate the 81st anniversary of Victory Day, attended by Russian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Timur Sirozhevich Sadykov, along with numerous delegates and members of the Viet Nam - Russia Friendship Association.

According to information from the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations, speaking at the ceremony, Hoang Minh Nhan, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Viet Nam - Russia Friendship Association, said the victory of the Soviet people contributed to the complete collapse of the colonial system worldwide, helping pave the way for the success of Viet Nam’s August Revolution, leading to the historic Dien Bien Phu victory and culminating in the Great Spring Victory of 1975, which liberated the South and reunified the country.

He expressed gratitude to the Soviet peoples and the Russian people for their wholehearted support and assistance to Viet Nam during the country’s difficult years, while affirming continued efforts to further strengthen the good relationship between the peoples of the two countries, contributing to friendship, prosperity, peace, and stability worldwide.

Speaking at the event, Consul General Timur Sirozhevich Sadykov recalled the historical significance of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War and the tremendous sacrifices and losses suffered by the Soviet and Russian peoples in the fight against fascism and in defense of their homeland. He affirmed that the Russian people always value the support and contributions of the Vietnamese people to this historic victory, including the participation of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in the Battle of Moscow.

On the same day in Hanoi, the Russian Embassy in Viet Nam, in coordination with the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Hanoi, organized the “Immortal Regiment” march at Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.

Hundreds of participants carried portraits of relatives, veterans, Red Army soldiers, guerrilla fighters, and workers on the home front. Each participant wore the black-and-orange Saint George ribbon on their chest, a traditional symbol associated with Russia’s spirit of courage and victory.

According to Hanoi Radio and Television, speaking at the ceremony, Russian Ambassador to Viet Nam Gennady Bezdetko said the “Immortal Regiment” activity has become a tradition in Russia and many countries around the world to honor and remember those who participated in the Great Patriotic War, including frontline soldiers, guerrilla forces, and home-front workers.

The ambassador also affirmed that Russia does not forget the Vietnamese international soldiers who fought side by side with the Soviet people during the winter of 1941 and in the battles to defend Moscow. He also paid tribute to the Vietnamese heroes who sacrificed their lives in the Battle of Dien Bien Phu and in the resistance wars for national reunification.
