The new bilateral cooperation project, funded by ACIAR and titled “Digital Monitoring of VietGAP Compliance in the Fruit Value Chain of Smallholder Farmers in the Northwest for High-Quality Domestic and Potential Export Markets,” will run for four years with a budget of 2.1 million Australian dollars (around 35 billion VND). The project is implemented by the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute (FAVRI), the Northern Mountainous Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute, and the Vietnam National University of Agriculture in collaboration with Australia’s Applied Horticultural Research (AHR).

The project will support farmers in Northwest Vietnam to access high-quality markets and enhance the position of Vietnamese fruit in the global value chain. It is an important part of ACIAR’s program in Vietnam, with a total support value of about 18.6 million Australian dollars over the next five years.

Deputy Minister Tran Thanh Nam of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment emphasized the importance of the partnership: “We look forward to working closely with Australia in general and ACIAR in particular to achieve goals of green growth, digital transformation, and innovation in agriculture, maximizing the advantages of both Australia and Vietnam.”

Meanwhile, Professor Wendy Umberger, Chief Executive Officer of ACIAR, expressed pride that ACIAR has been a partner of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment for more than 30 years.

Professor Wendy Umberger, ACIAR CEO, and Dr. Pham Ngoc Mau signed a new bilateral project to help Northwest Vietnam fruit farmers digitize production for better market access.

“We are pleased to see the integration of management in both environment and agriculture, which will enable Vietnam to address challenges more comprehensively. ACIAR is committed to supporting Vietnam-initiated initiatives, from identifying research needs to developing new projects in Vietnam, serving the interests of the Vietnamese people,” said Professor Wendy Umberger.

The dialogue also helped strengthen bilateral cooperation between ACIAR and other partners, including leaders and research agencies under the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Delegates from Australia and Vietnam participating in the dialogue work across various fields related to agriculture, including scientific research, policy, trade, and human resource development. The dialogue reaffirmed the commitment between ACIAR and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to a bilateral partnership based on trust, shared responsibility, and mutual benefits, as outlined in the Cooperation Agreement signed between ACIAR and the former Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in March 2024.

The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) is a government agency dedicated to agricultural research for development under the Australian Government’s aid program.

ACIAR provides knowledge and technology to deliver more sustainable and productive farming systems and more resilient food systems for the benefit of developing countries and Australia.

Since 1993, ACIAR has partnered with Vietnam, investing in more than 260 projects with a total value of over 184 million Australian dollars. ACIAR has also awarded more than 120 scholarships to Vietnamese scientists, helping them strengthen research capacity and develop leadership skills.
