On Sep 5, the opening day of the new school year, MoMo Piggybank Community and VinaCapital Foundation (VCF) handed over the water well and pumping system to Mu Sang Boarding Elementary School in Phong Tho district, Lai Chau province.
Phong Tho is a border mountainous district located in the north of Lai Chau province with 96% of the population being ethnic minorities. The remote location creates countless difficulties and challenges for the people of Phong Tho district in clean water access. Clean water is foundational to everyone’s health and reduces the spread of all types of diseases, especially for children from families in rural areas. Therefore, it is crucial to bring safe water to underserved ethnic communities like Phong Tho district.
For the first time, 500 students and 40 teachers of the Mu Sang Boarding Elementary School can stop using rainwater from unsanitary tanks and start getting clean water at school without having to travel more than 1.5km uphill to get water from the closest stream. This will help reduce water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid fever, E. Coli infection, and more, improving health outcomes and access to education for poor ethnic minority children in Lai Chau’s mountainous areas.
