Coast Guard Region 4 Combats IUU Fishing, Raising Fishermen’s Awareness

Naval Squadron 42 under the Command of Coast Guard Region 4 held its 2025 annual review conference on the morning of November 22. A highlight of the year was the work of inspection and communication on combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing for thousands of vessels and fishermen, contributing to the nation’s overall effort to have the European Commission’s “yellow card” lifted.

According to the report presented at the conference, in 2025, the Party Committee of Naval Squadron 42 led and directed the comprehensive and synchronized implementation of all tasks, fulfilling them excellently. The unit strictly maintained forces and equipment in a state of readiness for combat; proactively grasped the situation in the air and at sea; and effectively handled incidents, avoiding passivity or surprise. The squadron inspected and disseminated regulations on combating IUU fishing to 2,378 vessel trips with 16,780 fishermen, and firmly drove away foreign fishing boats violating Viet Nam’s waters.

Patrol, inspection, and law enforcement operations were carried out decisively. In 2025, the unit arrested 3 cases involving 3 vessels illegally transporting 128,643 liters of DO oil and 30 tons of sugar without invoices proving origin; and coordinated in arrest 2 cases involving 2 individuals illegally possessing narcotics, handing them over to the police for handling according to regulations.

Naval Squadron 42 also strengthened activities supporting fishermen, coordinating with Ca Mau province to organize 5 programs titled “Coast Guard accompanies fishermen,” 2 contests titled “I love the sea and islands of my homeland,” and disseminated laws and IUU regulations to 1,650 participants. These efforts contributed to raising community awareness toward a sustainable and responsible fishery sector.

Speaking at the conference, Colonel Dao Ba Viet, Commander of Coast Guard Region 4, praised the outstanding achievements of the officers and soldiers of Naval Squadron 42 in 2025. He requested the unit to continue upholding solidarity, proactively understanding the situation, effectively implementing the 2026 Coast Guard work plan; building a clean, strong, exemplary Party organization; developing the unit into an “exemplary, outstanding” comprehensively strong force; and excellently fulfilling all assigned tasks.

At the conference, the leadership of the squadron presented awards to collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in the 2025 Emulation for Determined Victory movement.

On this occasion, the Command of Coast Guard Region 4 also held the fourth quarter 2025 democratic dialogue conference between the regional command leadership and officers and soldiers of Naval Squadron 42. The conference took place in a democratic and open atmosphere, contributing to strengthening trust and creating motivation for officers and soldiers to continue striving to accomplish all assigned tasks.
