“The Phnom Penh’s authorities have recently loosened the lockdown order, allowing residents to travel among the provinces and cities”, Dr. Ton Thanh Tra, the General Director of Cho Ray Phnom Penh hospital told to VTC News.

However, according to him, medical workers at the hospital have still encountered difficulties in treating Covid-19 patients.

Making efforts to provide the best treatment to Covid-19 patients

Dr. Tra said that earlier 24 medical workers at the hospital were put under quarantine because they came into contact with a Covid-19 patient. The General Internal Medicine Department has recently also placed under lockdown and its 16 medical workers and 4 patients have been quarantined.

In spite of the quarantined medical staff and the lack of facilities, the hospital has still operated with 100% capacity.

“With the current situation, apart from 30 rooms, the hospital plans to use 20 rooms at the Department of Obstetrics and Department of Ear, Nose and Throat. If there is a surge in the number of Covid-19 infections, the General Internal Medicine Department will be utilized to receive Covid-19 patients. Thus, the total number of beds for treating Covid-19 cases can count to 100”, Dr. Tra said.

Dr. Tra added that the hospital receives 100-120 outpatients and 80-90 inpatients every day. In addition, it coordinated with the local authorities and military force to give the Covid-19 vaccines to residents in Phnom Penh.

"The hospital at first planned to vaccinate about 300-400 people, but now the tally of recipients reaches nearly 2000. Medical staff here have made all-out efforts to make residents feel more secure”, Dr. Tra said.

Compassionate love amidst the raging Covid-19 situation

Amidst the countless difficulties and challenges caused by the epidemic, it’s compassionate love and community responsibility that motivate medical workers to complete their duties.

There are many disadvantaged Vietnamese households in Phnom Penh and in the neighboring provinces, so medical workers always side by side with them to surmount the difficulties.

“The hospital coordinated with the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia to visit and hand over gifts to 350 disadvantage Vietnamese families who are under lockdown in the outskirt of Phnom Penh. The hospital also presented hand sanitizers and face masks for Cambodians”, Dr. Tra said.

Meanwhile, it received encouragement and support from the Vietnamese Embassy and the Vietnamese Business Association in Cambodia.

Unofficial information obtained by Khmer Times revealed that today Cambodia is likely to see approximately 900 COVID-19 positive cases announced and possibly more. At 22:00 hours yesterday, 880 positive cases have been detected.

The Ministry of Health announced 938 new COVID cases on Tuesday, the highest single day to date, bringing the tally to 16,299.

All the cases are connected to the February 20th Community Event which has now accrued 15,744 cases.

The health ministry reported 608 cases detected in the capital on Monday and today’s numbers will be around the same figure.

These high numbers come as Phnom Penh braces for a major easing of restrictions and conditions to locked-down areas.

The UK strain is still believed to be the main culprit behind the rapid spread of the virus, which has also claimed 107 lives.
