German Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Niels Annen on December 14 announced that the country would contribute 5 million euros (about 6.08 million USD) to the Covid-19 Response Fund of ASEAN.

The German Embassy in Vietnam stressed that countries should work together to effectively combat the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as to overcome its influences.

The Embassy emphasized that cooperation with ASEAN is a fundamental component of Germany's Indo-Pacific Orientation. The ASEAN COVID-19 Response Fund was established on June 26 by the heads of states and governments of ASEAN countries at the 36th ASEAN Summit, which was chaired by Vietnam.

As of November, Vietnam - the host country of the 37th ASEAN Summit - announced that the fund received $10 million. In which, each country including New Zealand, Korea, Japan, and India contributed 1 million USD. The bloc also agreed to set up the ASEAN Regional Reserve of Medical Supplies as suggested by PM Phuc at the April 14 ASEAN special summit on dealing with Covid-19.

Also at this conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc announced that Vietnam would contribute $100,000 to the Covid-19 Response Fund and pledging to contribute $5 million worth of medical equipment and supplies to the regional medical supplies reserve.

Other countries like Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand have pledged hundreds of millions of dollars.

Southeast Asia has recorded over one million cases of Covid-19. Indonesia currently has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the region, with over 620,000 infected and over 18,000 deaths. It is followed by the Philippines with over 450,000 infections and over 8,700 deaths.
