Hanoi - HCMC Remains in Top 10 Busiest Domestic Flight Routes

According to Noi Bai International Airport, the trunk route between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City - starting and ending at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat airports - consistently ranks among the top 10 busiest domestic air routes in the world. This results in an exceptionally high frequency of operations and pressure on services.

In the first half of 2025, passenger traffic through Noi Bai International Airport reached 16.5 million, with the total number of takeoffs and landings exceeding 100,000.

Notably, Terminal T2, which handles international passengers at Noi Bai, served over 7 million international travelers in the first six months of the year - already surpassing its designed capacity. The terminal’s current capacity is 10 million passengers per year, and it is currently undergoing expansion to increase capacity to 15 million annually.

Amid this high operational pressure, the on-time performance (OTP) rate over the past year (from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025) has been maintained at 74%. Among delayed flights, the majority (93.8%) were delayed due to airline operational issues. Delays due to weather accounted for 1.8%, airport equipment and services 0.8%, air traffic control 2.5%, and other reasons 1.1%.

Noi Bai International Airport acknowledges that this OTP rate needs further improvement and is actively coordinating with airlines and ground service units to implement comprehensive solutions to enhance punctuality in the near future.

To optimize air traffic management using technology, from February 1, 2024, Noi Bai officially implemented Phase 1 of the Airport Collaborative Decision-Making (A-CDM) model. Under this model, all related airport units proactively collaborate in decision-making and information sharing, effectively utilizing flight data to ensure operations adhere to A-CDM procedures.

In the first half of the year, 100,002 flights were managed through this system, helping efficiently coordinate runway and apron usage, reduce ground waiting times, and contribute to improved flight punctuality.

Additionally, Noi Bai International Airport continues to coordinate with the Air Traffic Flow Management Center (ATFMC), airlines, and ground service units to implement Level 3 Multi-Nodal Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) operations in Vietnam. This enhances operational flexibility in flight scheduling and minimizes the need for aircraft to enter holding patterns when affected by adverse operational conditions such as weather, military exercises, or national economic and political events.

Regarding infrastructure upgrade projects, the expansion of Terminal T2 is being urgently implemented in a rolling construction model - continuing operations while construction progresses. Once completed (expected by the end of 2025), the project is anticipated to fundamentally address overcapacity, create more spacious areas, and significantly enhance passenger service capabilities.
