(VNF) - Vietnamese shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh on August 10th won the silver medal in the men’s 50-metre pistol shooting event at the ongoing Rio Olympics in Brazil.

In the qualifying round, Vinh scored low in his first shooting series and even ranked outside the Top 20. At the final series, he made a comeback with two final shots scoring 10 which brought his total score up to 556 points.

His teammate Tran Quoc Cuong got 542 points and ranked 31st in the qualifying round.

South Korea’s Jin Jong-oh, gold medalist, in the middle of the final, fired a dismal 6.6, and was extremely close to being eliminated. After that shot, he turned it on, only shooting under a 10 on one shot in his final seven attempts. He set an Olympic record with a 193.7 score in 20 shots.

Hoang Xuan Vinh was in the lead for almost the entire final. Going into the final two shots, he had only a 0.2 lead on Jong-oh. He finished with 191.3 points.

This is the second medal of Rio for him, who won the gold in the 10m air pistol event. His gold medal was Vietnam’s first ever, and only fourth ever medal.

North Korea’s Kim Song Guk grabbed the bronze medal with a final score of 172.8./.
