March 22 marked the collaboration from National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology in Ho Chi Minh City with Operation Smile to implement a comprehensive care plan for children with cleft lips, palates in Vietnam.

This will be the first time the children are monitored, examined and treated from the time their mothers are pregnant until they reach the age of 16.

This event symbolizes Operation Smile’s dedication to provide comprehensive support, closely following the development of Vietnamese children with the engagement of doctors at National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology in Ho Chi Minh City.

The signing ceremony has the attendance of Associate Professor Dr. Lam Hoai Phuong - Former Director of National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology in Ho Chi Minh City and Medical Advisor of Operation Smile Vietnam; Doctor Le Trung Chanh - Director of National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology in Ho Chi Minh City; Board of Directors of the Hospital; and Nguyen Viet Phuong - Regional Vice President - Development, Asia Pacific and Country Representative of Operation Smile, and Operation Smile Vietnam’s ambassadors.

Also, on the morning of March 22, the National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology in Ho Chi Minh City cooperated with Operation Smile Vietnam organize a surgical mission for children born with cleft lip and palate in the city and other southern and central provinces.

The humanitarian surgical mission is taking place from March 22 to March 26. According to plan, 130 patients will be screened, and about 70 cases with cleft lip, palate and other facial defects will receive free surgery.

A cleft is an opening in the lip, the roof of the mouth or the soft tissue in the back of the mouth. A cleft lip may be accompanied by an opening in the bones of the upper jaw and/or the upper gum.

A cleft palate occurs when the two sides of a palate do not join together, resulting in an opening in the roof of the mouth. A cleft lip and palate can occur on one side or both sides. A child can suffer from a cleft lip, a cleft palate or both.

Operation Smile Vietnam is a charity organization that provides free reconstructive surgeries to children born with facial deformities.

Since its establishment in 1982, Operation Smile — through the help of dedicated medical volunteers — has provided over 220,000 free life-changing surgeries for children and young adults. Particularly During more than 30 years operating in Vietnam, Operation Smile has helped change lives for approximately 60,000 underprivileged children.

Last week, from March 15-19, Operation Smile cooperated with Hanoi-based Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital to organize a surgical mission for children born with cleft lip and palate.45 patients were screened, and 30 children out of 45 were received free surgery./.
