International Master is the second highest official chess title, after International Grandmaster GM. Previously, Vietnamese players who wanted to complete their IM or GM standards often had to go abroad for competitions.
The Hanoi-International chess tournaments, however, may help them to save time and traveling costs.
The event also helped increase the international Elo rating for Vietnamese chess players and determine the international standard for referees and tournament organizers.
Ilamparthi competed in the international master group. This group also has 9 other players from Vietnam, Bangladesh, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, and Australia. Among them, Bui Vinh, Cao Sang, and Tran Tuan Minh of Vietnam attended.
After 9 rounds, Ilamparthi was crowned champion, scoring 7.0/9. In the journey to the championship, Ilamparthi won against Tran Tuan Minh, Murshed Niaz (Bangladesh), and tied with Bui Vinh and Cao Sang.
With this result, in addition to being the champion, player Ilamparthi also won the International Grandmaster norm. This is also his first International Grandmaster norm.
