The keynote address delivered by General Secretary and State President To Lam at the 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue has continued to attract attention from international media and observers. Many have highly appreciated his messages regarding the central role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as the need for countries to engage in dialogue and cooperation to maintain peace and stability amid intensifying geopolitical competition.

According to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) correspondent in Jakarta, Indonesia’s Antara News Agency and Tempo newspaper on May 30 published articles covering General Secretary and President To Lam’s keynote speech at the opening session of the 2026 Shangri-La Dialogue.

The articles cited the Vietnamese leader’s assessment that the Asia-Pacific region shares common interests in peace, connectivity, and development, while also possessing extensive experience in multi-layered cooperation.

General Secretary and President To Lam also emphasized that ASEAN has sufficient motivation and determination to prevent competition from turning into confrontation, to ensure that connectivity routes do not become lines of division, and to prevent one country’s security from becoming another country’s insecurity.

According to the reports, the Vietnamese leader noted that ASEAN’s centrality neither emerges naturally nor sustains itself automatically. ASEAN can only maintain this role through unity, strategic autonomy, and the capacity to shape a common agenda.

Indonesian media paid particular attention to General Secretary and President To Lam’s message that the Asia-Pacific region welcomes a transparent and responsible presence that respects international law and contributes to reducing tensions and strengthening trust among nations.

Observers believe that these remarks reflect Vietnam’s consistent position of promoting multilateralism, upholding ASEAN’s role, and emphasizing the importance of dialogue and cooperation in addressing regional and global security challenges.

Against the backdrop of an increasingly complex global geopolitical environment, the messages of ASEAN unity, strategic autonomy, and confidence-building are regarded as highly relevant and practical. They also help affirm Vietnam’s increasingly active role in regional and international affairs.
