Japan Supports Vietnamese Children Against Climate Change

In Hanoi, Takio Yamada, Ambassador of Japan to Vietnam, and Rana Flowers, UNICEF representative in Viet Nam signed the exchange of notes of "Project for enhancing resilience to disaster risks and climate change for children”, on November 17.

The project funded by the Japanese Government to the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development through UNICEF in Vietnam is worth US$5.7 million for the period 2021 - 2026. Children are identified as a priority of the project, because they are sensitive to climate.

Accordingly, the project will strengthen institutional capacity to support children's disaster response. The proposals and results of the project are designed to meet the needs of children, with a focus on climate change response, nutrition, clean water and sanitation. At the same time, it equips children, families and communities with the necessary knowledge and skills to respond to climate change and natural disasters in the Central region and the Mekong Delta, focusing on Soc Trang, Ca Mau, Bac Lieu.

The project is expected to strengthen the resilience of 20,000 people, including 9,000 children, with improved water and sanitation services; 10,000 children under 5 years old will be screened for severe acute malnutrition for timely intervention.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Rana Flowers, UNICEF representative in Viet Nam said: According to the Children's Climate Risk Index published by UNICEF 2021, in Vietnam, children and adolescents are those most at risk of being affected by climate change, directly threatening health and education. Through the project, UNICEF and Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development work together to ensure that children grow up in a safe, green and clean environment.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep affirmed that this signing ceremony is an important milestone in the strong partnership between the Government of Japan, the Government of Vietnam and UNICEF.

In the coming time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development hopes that the Government of Japan and UNICEF will continue to share experiences in building public-private cooperation projects to strengthen the resilience of the management system and prevention against natural disasters.

At the same time, the Ministry made recommendations for the Government of Vietnam to carry out a communication campaign to change behavior in the field of disaster risk reduction, raising awareness for people in localities, promoting the building of a sustainable society.
