Piloting high-tech marine farming
In a report submitted to the 11th National Congress of the Vietnam Fatherland Front for the 2026-2031 term, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Khanh Hoa Province stated that the marine and coastal economy currently contributes around 80% of the province’s GRDP. Fisheries continue to be one of the province’s key economic sectors, with total output in 2025 exceeding 280,000 tons and export turnover reaching approximately USD 870 million.
As natural marine resources decline and anti-IUU fishing requirements become increasingly stringent, Khanh Hoa Province has begun accelerating its transition toward high-tech marine aquaculture. Since 2025, the Government has allowed the province to pilot high-tech marine farming development in aquaculture zones such as Van Phong, Nha Trang, and Cam Ranh. Models for farming marine fish, lobsters, and other species have been equipped with underwater surveillance cameras, positioning systems, and remote monitoring systems connected to electronic devices.

According to the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Khanh Hoa Province, the application of technology helps monitor the farming environment, ensure traceability, guarantee food safety, and reduce pressure on nearshore fishing activities. It is also considered a way to gradually transform production methods at sea, minimize risks from natural disasters and disease outbreaks, and protect the aquaculture environment.
In the first three months of 2026, Khanh Hoa Province recorded seafood output of around 60,000 tons, including approximately 52,000 tons from capture fisheries and more than 8,100 tons from aquaculture.
Fishermen join hands to protect the sea
Alongside livelihood transformation efforts, many marine conservation models in Khanh Hoa Province have also seen direct participation from local fishing communities. At the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area in Nha Trang Bay and the Ran Trao Marine Ecosystem Protection Area model in Van Hung Commune, residents work together to protect coral reefs and nearshore marine resources.
Co-management of conservation projects has contributed to restoring marine resources, protecting threatened marine species, and maintaining stable marine ecosystems. The use of destructive fishing methods has been largely eliminated in many areas.
In recent years, numerous support programs for fishermen in coastal and island areas have been implemented locally. The program “Lighting up the sea with fishermen” has provided fishermen with batteries, LED lights, battery packs, medical kits, the handbook “Essential knowledge for seafood fishing,” and many other essential supplies.
The Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Khanh Hoa Province stated that women’s unions at all levels in the province have mobilized more than VND 15.7 billion through the program “Accompanying women in border areas,” while organizing hundreds of communication sessions and providing livelihood support, scholarships, and health insurance for women, children, and fishermen in coastal and island communities.
The provincial Youth Union has also carried out numerous activities directed toward Vietnam’s seas and islands, including “Lighting up remote islands” and “Truong Sa in my heart,” while also supporting the families of officers, soldiers, and young people joining military service.
According to the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Khanh Hoa Province, in the coming period, the province will continue promoting public awareness and encouraging residents to develop the marine economy in association with safeguarding national sovereignty over seas and islands. At the same time, it aims to strengthen the self-governance role of communities in protecting the marine environment and developing sustainable livelihoods. As the fishing industry faces profound changes, the gradual transition from capture fishing to high-tech marine aquaculture is being regarded as one of the province’s long-term development directions.
