Having worked as a teacher in Vietnam for three years, Phoumphithath Oupaseuth, a Laotian, said he had an amazing experience on Vietnamese Teachers' Day.

Vietnamese Teachers' Day (Nov. 20) is the nation's way of showing respect for its teachers. For foreign teachers, the occasion comes with surprising gifts and congratulations.

“I have lived and studied in Vietnam for many years and had the opportunity to celebrate Vietnamese Teachers' Day many times. This is the third year I work as a teacher, but my feelings and emotions are still the same as in the first year,” said Phoumphithath, a lecturer at the Department of Southeast Asian Linguistics and Cultures at Vietnam National University in Hanoi.

He says he feels excited and looks forward to the day every year. Receiving flowers, cards, and thanks from students and parents for his work is a great encouragement, he said.

“Teachers' Day is a very special celebration. In Vietnam, the teaching profession is considered the most precious. Teaching is not an easy job, especially for a Laotian like me. Language and culture barriers are the biggest challenge. In a big class, each student has a different background, so the teacher really has to offer each one a unique way of teaching. I feel honored that my contributions to education, and to the cultural and educational connection between Vietnam - Laos are recognized," he said.

The Laotian said that at a younger age, he never thought he would become a lecturer. When he came to Vietnam, he dreamt of becoming a diplomat.

While studying in Vietnam, Phoumphithath tried teaching Laotian to gain experience and found he had a passion for the job.

"I am fortunate and happy to become a lecturer at the Department of Southeast Asian Linguistics and Cultures, University of Languages & International Studies, Vietnam National University in Hanoi, where I have the opportunity to teach my mother tongue. I will dedicate myself to my work and inspire my students to study Laotian well. Having settled down in Vietnam, I want to pursue a long-term teaching career here."
