Survey results indicate that 89% of expatriates living in Vietnam are satisfied with the cost of living, while 87% say their income is sufficient to “live very comfortably.” According to InterNations, prices for goods and services in Vietnam are considered particularly competitive, ranging from dining and accommodation to transportation and tourism.

The online publication also notes that street food is one of the factors contributing to Vietnam’s appeal. In the capital city of Hanoi and many other major urban centers, signature dishes such as pho, banh mi, and bun cha are priced between 1 and 3 euros. Such prices are regarded as difficult to find in many other well-known tourist destinations.

Accommodation costs are also low. Dormitory beds in budget hostels start at 5 euros per night, while hotels and traditional guesthouses typically range from 8 to 20 euros per night. This level of expenditure suits a wide range of travelers, from backpackers to families. Domestic transportation is considered budget-friendly. A monthly public transport pass costs about 7 euros; average taxi fares are under 0.5 euro per kilometer; and gasoline is priced at approximately 0.7 euro per liter - significantly lower than in many European countries.

In addition to living expenses, sightseeing activities are also considered reasonably priced. A two-day cruise in Ha Long Bay costs around 100 euros, including an onboard cabin, meals, kayaking, and entrance fees to caves. In Sa Pa, a two-day trekking tour through terraced rice fields costs approximately 60 euros, including a guide, meals, and one night’s homestay accommodation.

Previously, the 2026 ranking published by the website Retraite sans Frontières (Retirement Without Borders) identified destinations offering the best balance between quality of life and affordability for retirees, with Vietnam ranked ninth.

Vietnam is increasingly recognized as an attractive destination for international retirees thanks to its harmonious combination of reasonable living costs, diverse living environments, and steadily improving service quality. With moderate expenses, retirees can maintain a comfortable and stable lifestyle without significant financial pressure, particularly those living on fixed pensions.

In addition, the country’s diverse climate across regions provides various settlement options, from sunny coastal cities and cool highlands to major urban centers with developed infrastructure. The healthcare system, especially in large cities, is being upgraded with numerous hospitals and international clinics that combine modern medicine with traditional healthcare approaches, effectively meeting the needs of the elderly.
