Lao and Cambodian Students Celebrate Traditional New Year Festivals in Vietnam

On the occasion of the traditional New Year festivals Bunpimay and Chol Chnam Thmay in 2026, various gatherings and cultural exchange activities for Lao and Cambodian students, as well as Khmer ethnic youth, were held in An Giang, Thanh Hoa, and Da Nang.

In An Giang, according to Tien Phong newspaper, on April 9, the Provincial Youth Union organized a meeting for Lao and Cambodian students and Khmer Youth Union members.

(Photo: Tien Phong)  Pham Huu Khuyen, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, stated that in recent years, local authorities and sectors have implemented numerous activities to support both the material and spiritual well-being of international students and Khmer ethnic youth. These include cultural exchanges among Kinh, Cham, Hoa, and Khmer communities, as well as social welfare programs, contributing to a cohesive and compassionate learning environment. As a result, Lao and Cambodian students can focus on their studies, acquire knowledge and skills, and later return to contribute to their home countries, becoming “bridges” that strengthen ties among the three nations. On this occasion, many Lao and Cambodian students with outstanding academic achievements, as well as Khmer Youth Union members with notable contributions to youth activities, were presented with gifts.  Phommala Vanthakone, a representative of Lao and Cambodian students studying at An Giang University, shared that although they initially faced many challenges adapting to life in Vietnam, the support and care from provincial leaders, teachers, and peers helped them gain confidence. “We not only take home knowledge but also carry with us warm memories of the people of An Giang,” she said, affirming their determination to become “small bridges” fostering friendship.  On the same day in Thanh Hoa, Hong Duc University organized a Bunpimay celebration for 109 Lao students. Representatives of local authorities and the Vietnam–Laos Friendship Association of Thanh Hoa Province highly appreciated the university’s support, noting that Bunpimay is not only a traditional festival but also a vivid symbol of the special friendship and solidarity between the two countries. The students expressed their appreciation and committed to striving in their studies to become high-quality human resources for Laos.  The program featured various activities, including traditional rituals, cultural performances, cuisine, and Lamvong dance, creating a warm and cohesive atmosphere. (Photo: Da Nang City Portal)  In Da Nang, according to the city’s official portal, nearly 300 Lao students at the University of Science and Education – University of Da Nang celebrated Bunpimay with full traditional rituals such as wrist-tying ceremonies, water splashing, traditional costume presentations, and folk performances. These activities helped ease homesickness and enabled students to gradually adapt and consider the place their second home.  University leaders affirmed their continued support in creating favorable conditions for international students to focus on their studies, while a representative of the Lao Consulate General in Da Nang highly appreciated these efforts, noting that the students themselves serve as “ambassadors” contributing to strengthening bilateral relations.
