Mock Trial Raises Awareness on IUU Fishing for Lam Dong Fishermen

Fisheries Surveillance Team No. 4 under Coast Guard Region 3 Command, the Provincial Party Committee’s Commission for Information and Mass Mobilization, the People’s Court of Lam Dong province, and the People’s Committee of Phan Thiet ward, in coordination with Justice Newspaper, organized a “mock trial” to raise awareness about combating IUU fishing among more than 200 local fishermen on the afternoon of March 24 in Phan Thiet ward, Lam Dong province.

The mock trial was developed based on a real-life criminal case involving the offenses of “organizing illegal exit” and “disrupting the operation of electronic devices.” Legal provisions related to fisheries exploitation, as well as the processes of investigation, prosecution, and trial, were vividly and visually reenacted, making it easier for people to understand, access, and enhance their awareness of legal compliance.

This was not merely a simulation but also delivered a strong message to the community: legal, responsible, and sustainable fishing is the only path to protecting long-term livelihoods, preserving aquatic resources for future generations, and joining national efforts to remove the European Commission’s “yellow card,” thereby bringing practical benefits to fishermen.

At the event, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hien, Political Commissar of Fisheries Surveillance Team No. 4, stated that in recent years, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing has remained complex. Since 2017, the European Commission has issued a “yellow card” warning against Vietnam’s fisheries sector, significantly affecting the country’s reputation, seafood exports, and the livelihoods of fishermen.

Earlier the same morning, a similar mock trial was organized in Lien Huong commune, Lam Dong province, with the participation of 300 people, including 200 local fishermen. Following the session, the organizing committee carried out various meaningful activities such as distributing communication materials and organizing fishermen to sign commitments not to violate IUU regulations. In addition, 30 gift packages were presented in each locality to fishermen from policy beneficiary families and those in difficult circumstances.

Lam Dong province currently has more than 8,210 fishing vessels, of which those measuring from 6 to under 12 meters in length account for 52.7%. All vessels have been updated in the national fisheries database, and 7,234 vessels still have valid fishing licenses, accounting for 88.14%.
