During the 2026-2027 dry season and 2027, Nghe An province aims to collect 180 sets of martyrs’ remains, including 110 sets of remains in Xieng Khouang, Vientiane, and Xaysomboun (Laos) and 70 sets within Vietnam. Under the plan, the task force will depart for Laos on August 14, 2026, to implement the search and recovery operation.

To meet the target, the province has asked relevant agencies, local authorities, and mass organizations to continue improving the effectiveness of efforts to search for, recover, and identify martyrs’ remains in Nghe An and the three provinces of the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

The units involved will focus on collecting, verifying, and cross-checking information, and investigating areas where reports of martyrs’ graves have been received; while strengthening coordination to complete the recovery plans at home and abroad.

Alongside the search operations, Nghe An is accelerating the collection of samples from unidentified remains at martyrs’ cemeteries across the province. The sampling process will be carried out in accordance with regulations and safety requirements, while records and data concerning martyrs and their graves will be reviewed and supplemented to support identìication efforts. The province aims to complete the sampling work in October 2026.

Besides, communes and wards will also continue reviewing martyrs’ cemeteries, memorial structures, and graves under local management to develop plans for the restoration, repair, and upgrading ahead of the 80th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day (27/7/1947 - 27/7/2027). Local authorities will continue completing records relating to martyrs and people with meritorious service to the revolution, updating databases on martyrs and their relatives, and organising practical commemorative activities to honour the sacrifices and contributions of fallen heroes, war invalids, sick soldiers and others who rendered service to the revolution.

According to the report, Nghe An currently has 2,260 martyrs’ graves requiring sample collection for identification purposes. As of July 21, authorities had exhumed 1,139 graves and successfully collected samples from 965 of them; 174 graves were unsuitable for sampling, resulting in a success rate of 84.7%.

Now, 1,121 graves still require sampling, providing a basis for identifying martyrs, fulfilling the wishes of their families and effectively implementing Vietnam’s “gratitude” policy.
