A “Magnet” for Tourists

Ninh Binh is often described as a “living museum,” boasting a dense network of cultural and historical heritage sites associated with the Dinh, Early Le, Ly, and Tran dynasties. Rather than preserving heritage solely within historical sites and museums, Ninh Binh Province has, over the years, made traditional festivals a central pillar of its sustainable tourism development strategy.

From the very beginning of spring, Ninh Binh draws visitors through a series of traditional festivals, including Bai Dinh Pagoda Festival, Tam Chuc Pagoda Festival, Vieng Market Festival, the Tran Temple Seal-Opening Festival, and the Tran Thuong Temple Festival. These long-standing festivals, closely linked to key historical and cultural landmarks, have been elevated in both scale and quality, creating cultural spaces that are at once solemn and deeply rooted in local identity, attracting millions of tourists.

Even festivals taking place late at night or in the early hours of the morning fail to deter tens of thousands of visitors from attending, as seen at the Spring Vieng Market Festival and the Tran Temple Seal-Opening Festival.

Thousands of visitors attend the Tam Chuc Pagoda Festival at the beginning of spring.

Following the traditional festivals held early in the year, Ninh Binh continues to host a range of major events such as the Hoa Lu Festival, Trang An Festival, Long Doi Son Pagoda Festival, and the Tam Coc Golden Rice Festival, all of which have witnessed a significant surge in visitor numbers compared to periods without festivals.

The harmonious blend of spiritual values, picturesque landscapes, and traditional festivals steeped in cultural and historical significance has created a powerful tourism magnet. Visitors come not only to admire the scenery but also to immerse themselves in the local cultural environment and experience unique rituals that have been passed down through generations for thousands of years. The transformation from “reading history in books” to “touching history through festivals” is the key factor sustaining Ninh Binh’s tourism growth momentum.

A Sustainable Path Forward

Commenting on the role of traditional festivals in shaping local identity and attracting sustainable tourism flows, Nguyen Cao Tan, Deputy Director of the Ninh Binh Department of Tourism, stated:

“Ninh Binh has consistently regarded culture as the foundation and source of internal strength for tourism development. In recent years, the tourism sector has worked closely with relevant agencies and localities to preserve and promote heritage values. Beyond maintaining their original form, many festivals have been conserved through a ‘living preservation’ approach, allowing them to remain vibrant within local communities while becoming distinctive tourism products.”

Bui Viet Thang, Director of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex Management Board, the agency directly responsible for maintaining the Trang An Festival, noted that the greatest challenge of organizing a festival within a heritage site is balancing spiritual values and authenticity with service provision, while meeting the needs of tens of thousands of visitors arriving simultaneously.

“Organizing a large-scale festival within a World Heritage Site requires meticulous attention to every detail. We focus on faithfully restoring and reenacting rituals such as the water procession and ceremonial offerings to preserve their sacred character, while also providing training in civilized conduct for boat rowers and tour guides. Our ultimate goal is that every visitor stepping onto a boat not only admires the beauty of the caves and mountains but also feels the profound cultural pride of the people of the ancient capital. Professional and solemn organization is the key to building trust and encouraging visitors to return,” Bui Viet Thang shared.

Ninh Binh: Traditional Festivals as Powerful Tourism Draw
Traditional festivals in Ninh Binh have now been elevated into cultural bridges, helping strengthen the tourism brand of the ancient capital region.

Traditional festivals in Ninh Binh, once limited to spiritual activities within village communities, have now been elevated into cultural bridges that create sustainable livelihoods for thousands of local residents while contributing to the strengthening of the province’s tourism brand.

However, tourism development based on festival culture also presents long-term challenges, including environmental protection, preventing infrastructure overload during peak seasons, and addressing excessive commercialization that could erode the original identity of these festivals.

With the collective efforts of authorities and, above all, the pride of the people of the ancient capital, it is believed that the thousand-year cultural heritage of Ninh Binh will continue to be preserved, safeguarded, and promoted, serving as a valuable “green resource” that enables the province’s tourism industry to shine ever more brightly.
