To tighten control and enhance community awareness, Naval Squadron 42, in coordination with the People’s Committee of U Minh Commune (Ca Mau), held a communication session on preventing and combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing on November 13. A notable highlight was the modernization of outreach efforts through the application of digital technology.

At the event, officers of Naval Squadron 42 distributed and attached QR codes at fishing ports, boat docks, and on fishing vessels. The QR codes function as an “IUU Electronic Handbook,” allowing fishermen to use their smartphones to scan and quickly access key legal information such as the Fisheries Law, the Law of the Sea of Viet Nam, penalties for IUU violations, and mandatory regulations for offshore operations. The digitalization of content enables fishermen to access information anytime and anywhere, increasing their initiative in compliance.

Alongside the use of QR codes, the authorities continue to maintain traditional methods such as centralized communication sessions, distribution of leaflets, and legal handbooks, contributing to diversifying information channels and ensuring fishermen understand the regulations while working.

Immediately after the communication session, the Task Force directly boarded fishing vessels docked at the port to meet with vessel owners, captains, and crew members, encouraging strict compliance with IUU fishing prevention regulations.

The combination of digital technology and direct engagement is considered an effective solution, fostering positive changes in the awareness and actions of the fishing community, contributing to the national effort to remove the “yellow card” issued by the European Commission and move toward sustainable fisheries development.
