Quang Tri Establishes Two Inter-agency Control Teams to Combat IUU Fishing at Sea

In response to the need to tighten management of fisheries exploitation activities, Quang Tri Province has recently established two inter-agency control teams that will operate regularly in the province’s sea areas to strengthen patrols, inspections, and monitoring, as well as to prevent and strictly handle illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities.

Seven Southern Provinces and Cities Coordinate to Prevent Illegal Cross-Border Fishing, Combat IUU Fishing

The Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee has decided to establish two inter-agency control teams tasked with conducting patrols and inspections in local sea areas, river mouths, fishing ports, and anchorage zones for fishing vessels.

Accordingly, the Northern Sea Area Control Team is responsible for patrolling and inspecting the area from Phu Trach Commune to Cam Hong Commune, with a focus on river mouths, fishing ports, and fishing vessel anchorage areas.

The Southern Sea Area Control Team is in charge of the area from Cua Tung Commune to Hai An Commune, paying particular attention to key locations with a high risk of violations in fisheries exploitation activities.

The core force of the control teams is led by the Quang Tri Provincial Border Guard Command, in coordination with the Sub-department of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance, the Standing Militia Naval Squadron, and the People’s Committees of coastal communes and wards.

The key tasks of the teams are to organize comprehensive patrols and inspections in coastal sandy communes, waterways, river mouths, and fishing vessel anchorage areas; and to promptly detect and strictly handle violations of fisheries laws. In particular, the forces focus on preventing and thoroughly addressing the situation of “three-no” fishing vessels (no registration, no license, no monitoring), as well as vessels that do not meet operational requirements but deliberately evade inspection by competent authorities to go offshore for fishing.

Alongside inspection and enforcement activities, the inter-agency control teams also intensify communication and guidance for fishermen to strictly comply with legal regulations, raise awareness of sustainable fisheries exploitation, and contribute to nationwide efforts to remove the European Commission’s IUU “yellow card.”

The peak period for patrols and inspections against IUU fishing in Quang Tri’s sea areas will be implemented from January 20 to May 30, 2026.
