Emergency relief and reconstruction after natural disasters
Two months after Storm No. 3 (Yagi), many residents of Tran Yen District, including the family of 63-year-old Nguyen Thi Nga from Quy Mong Commune, are still grappling with the aftermath.
“We tried to lift our furniture as high as we could, but the floodwaters still swept almost everything away,” Nga recalled. “The refrigerator and TV were completely ruined. We were left with no blankets, no clothes. The cement floor was soaked for so long that it’s now peeling apart.”

After the flood, Nga's family struggled to return to normal life. Their vegetable garden, the main source of income, is now buried under a thick layer of hardened mud, making it impossible to cultivate or grow crops. Nga’s deteriorating health allows her to hoe only a small corner of the garden each day. The family now relies on her son, who works far from home and sends back VND 2–3 million each month.
Currently, Nga lives with her daughter-in-law and one-year-old grandson. Though burdened with many worries, they are also her source of strength and motivation to keep going each day.
With the VND 5 million in support from Save the Children, Nga plans to purchase essential necessities and gradually stabilize her life. However, given the extent of the damage caused by the flood, her family still needs further support to rebuild sustainable livelihoods.
Nga’s family is one of nearly 2,500 households in Yen Bai that received emergency assistance from Save the Children, with a total budget of nearly VND 26.4 billion. Beyond household support, the organization also assessed and aided 22 schools across Yen Bai City, Tran Yen, and Van Yen districts, helping students return to school safely and promptly.

Tan Dong Primary and Secondary School (Tran Yen District) is among the schools that suffered heavy damage. “Hundreds of cubic meters of rock and soil from the hill behind collapsed, destroying the toilets and severely damaging two floors of classrooms. Currently, eight classes have been urgently evacuated. Study activities have been disrupted,” said Nguyen Thi Thu, the school’s principal. “We look forward to receiving support to restore damage and supplement facilities so that students can soon return to their studies.”
Accompany to overcome natural disasters
Speaking to reporters, Le Thi Thuy Duong, Program Director of Save the Children, affirmed: “Save the Children always pursues two parallel goals: sustainable community development and timely emergency relief, placing children, the most vulnerable group, at the heart of all our efforts. In 2024, whether responding to drought in Ca Mau, Storm No. 2 in Son La, or Storm No. 3 and the floods in Yen Bai and Lao Cai, we have been present to support children and families in overcoming hardship.”
From 2014 to 2024, Save the Children implemented 13 emergency response projects across Vietnam. In 2020 alone, the organization mobilized USD 1.14 million to support communities affected by severe flooding. In 2024, an additional USD 1.7 million was raised to assist children and households impacted by natural disasters, including drought in Ca Mau, and storms and floods in Son La, Lao Cai, and Yen Bai. |
In addition to providing cash assistance to help families meet their immediate needs, the organization works closely with government agencies and partners to assess the situation, deliver emergency support packages, and plan for long-term recovery.
Speaking about the role of local partners in relief efforts, Tran Duc Manh, Project Manager at Save the Children, shared: “We collaborate closely with local partners, empowering them to take the lead in implementing relief activities. This approach enables communities to manage aid efforts more proactively, ensuring the program aligns with real needs. It also helps strengthen the capacity of partner agencies in emergency response. At the same time, community members can provide input on the level of cash support and implementation timelines, which enhances the effectiveness and transparency of our emergency relief programs.”

To ensure the long-term effectiveness of disaster relief and prevention efforts, Save the Children has been actively promoting community education on climate change, building safe communities, and establishing safe schools. The organization also strengthens the capacity of local rescue teams and equips community members, especially students, with essential emergency response skills. This knowledge empowers both students and residents to be proactive and better prepared in the event of emergencies.
