Truong Sa: Every Family a “Living Landmark” on the Frontline of the Sea

On the occasion of Vietnamese Family Day (June 28), stories from households in the Truong Sa Special Zone highlight how family bonds on these remote islands extend far beyond individual homes. They are strengthened by comradeship, solidarity between the military and civilians, and mutual support, providing a firm foundation for both soldiers and residents as they safeguard the nation's maritime frontier.

Amid the vast ocean, the Truong Sa Special Zone is not only the front line in protecting Vietnam’s sovereignty over its seas and islands but also a place where life continues to flourish. Across the islands, homes, schools, community centers, medical clinics, pagodas, piers, and fishing harbors have helped transform the appearance of this strategic outpost.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Phan Thai Bao, Deputy Political Commissar of Sinh Ton Island, Truong Sa has undergone significant changes in recent years thanks to the attention and support of the Party, the State, the military, and people across the country. Wind and solar power systems, along with various civilian infrastructure projects, have gradually improved the material and spiritual well-being of both military personnel and residents on the islands.

No longer only a "fortress" safeguarding national sovereignty, today’s Truong Sa has become home to a stable community where families live peacefully amid the sea and sky. For officers and soldiers stationed on the islands, fellow service members are also part of one large family. During holidays, Lunar New Year, birthdays, or times of illness, they share, encourage, and support one another, easing the longing for loved ones on the mainland.

Pham Thi Bay, a resident of Truong Sa Island, shared that for families living on the islands, building a happy home goes hand in hand with protecting national sovereignty over the seas and islands. Children who grow up surrounded by the sound of waves beneath Vietnam’s red flag with a yellow star are instilled from an early age with love for their homeland, national pride, and a sense of responsibility toward the country's maritime territories.

The peaceful rhythm of life in Truong Sa is reflected in the sound of school drums, students reading their lessons, community cultural activities, and volleyball matches between soldiers and civilians. Hundreds of nautical miles from the mainland, the families of naval personnel are also sustained by the quiet sacrifices of wives and mothers back home. Phone calls and heartfelt conversations become invaluable sources of encouragement during breaks and days off.

From Sinh Ton Island, Le Thi Kim Thi noted that experience has shown wherever strong families are nurtured, solidarity, resilience, and mission performance are all strengthened. Therefore, Party committees and commanders throughout the archipelago consistently prioritize policies supporting military families, care for the well-being of officers and soldiers, coordinate with local authorities to assist military families facing difficulties, and organize cultural, sports, and military-civilian exchange activities.

At the same time, campaigns promoting cultured families, vibrant community cultural life, and comprehensively strong military units have been carried out in a coordinated manner. Everyday acts such as tending gardens together, protecting the environment, helping fishermen seek shelter during storms, and supporting children's education have spread compassion and brought Truong Sa closer to the mainland.

According to Private Pham Thanh Nhan, a soldier stationed on Truong Sa Island, fostering family values in the Truong Sa Special Zone is not only about ensuring the happiness of individual households but also about building the spiritual foundation for the mission of protecting Vietnam’s maritime sovereignty. When every family is a loving home, every soldier has unwavering support behind them, and every resident feels secure in building a life on the islands, the collective strength to defend the nation's seas and islands is multiplied.

Amid the endless expanse of the ocean, today’s Truong Sa is home not only to sturdy infrastructure and sovereignty markers but also to children’s laughter, classrooms filled with the sound of lessons, green vegetable gardens, and rows of coastal trees standing before island homes. Every happy family here serves as a "living landmark," helping build a strong people-centered defense posture at sea while affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty through love, responsibility, and confidence in the future.
