Universities In Vietnam Organize Tet Activities For International Students

On the occasion of the Lunar New Year, many universities across Vietnam have organized activities such as making banh chung, practicing calligraphy, hosting gatherings, cultural performances, and presenting gifts. These events aim to allow international students to experience the beauty of Vietnam’s traditional culture and feel the warmth of the festive season during the first days of the new year.

On February 12, Cuu Long University in Vinh Long held a “Tet Reunion” gathering and presented gifts to international students who remained on campus during the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Horse 2026.

Distinguished Teacher, Associate Professor Dr. Luong Minh Cu, Rector of the university, extended his wishes for good health and academic success to the international students.

According to the university, it currently hosts approximately 140 international students pursuing academic programs and research. This Tet holiday, 48 students are staying in the dormitory, including 26 students from Laos, two from Cambodia, and five from Sri Lanka. Each student received VND 700,000 in lucky money, Tet gifts, and an additional VND 600,000 in meal support, with the total funding amounting to nearly VND 70 million.

International students also took part in making banh tet, preparing coconut jam, and enjoying spring outings to Ba Dong Beach, nearby wind farms, and Ao Ba Om.

Manibot Palisak, a Lao pharmacy student (Cohort 24), shared: “Although we live far from our homeland and families, we still feel warmth here. Our teachers are like parents, and our Vietnamese friends are like brothers and sisters. Here, we not only study but also participate in cultural, artistic, and sports exchange activities, helping us develop life skills and grow in many ways.”

Earlier, on February 11, Hue College in Hue organized the program “Sharing Spring - Warm Vietnam-Laos Friendship,” providing travel support for nearly 100 Lao students from Cohort 49 majoring in Vietnamese Language to return home for the Tet holiday, with a total funding of nearly VND 40 million. Ngo Si Cac, Vice Rector of the college, said the program aimed to cover travel expenses and ensure students could return home safely and conveniently.

At the University of Economics and Law under Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, the “Spring Festival 2026” program offered international students hands-on experiences such as wearing and photographing in ao dai, competing in banh chung wrapping, musical exchanges, and tea gatherings. Dr. Tran Quang Long, Director of the International Institute, noted: “The Spring Festival is an annual event designed to give international students, especially those studying in Vietnam for the first time, the opportunity to approach local culture directly and engagingly. Beyond academic knowledge, we hope international students will also understand and truly experience Vietnamese cultural life.”

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City Open University hosted the “Colors of Vietnamese Tet” program and a Traditional Lunar New Year Festival featuring activities such as coconut leaf weaving, calligraphy writing, piggy bank painting, and to he figurine crafting. Tran Van Tri, Head of the Office of Student Affairs and Communications, said international students also participated in spring volunteer activities, including presenting gifts to disadvantaged children and families, planting trees, and conducting environmental clean-up campaigns.

At Nguyen Tat Thanh University in Ho Chi Minh City, 47 Lao and Cambodian students staying in Vietnam for Tet joined in wrapping banh chung and attending year-end celebrations. The university’s Board of Rectors personally visited, extended New Year greetings, and presented lucky money to the students at the start of the year.
