UN’s Secretary-General sends sympathy to Vietnam over flood damage in the center

Upon knowing the severity of the flood that’s been hitting Central Vietnam in the last three weeks, António Guterres on October 29 sent a telegram to express his condolence message to the Vietnamese Government and people.

Accordingly, Guterres highly appreciated the efforts of the Vietnamese Government in supporting flood-stricken areas and individuals. He further stressed that the UN was willing to provide Vietnam with humanitarian assistance to overcome this difficult time.

Last week, leaders of China, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, among others also sent their wishes and condolences messages to locals in Central Vietnam regarding the heavy human and property losses triggered by the record flood.

China’s Premier Li Keqiang on October 22 sent a telegram to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc upon informed of the severity of the recent flood that struck Vietnam’s central provinces, report of the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs reads.

Also on October 22, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan sent telegrams expressing their condolences to those affected by consistent floods and landslides in the central strip.

Dr Balakrishnan said he was “very saddened by the tragic loss of lives and devastation caused by the floods and landslides in central Vietnam” in a letter on Thursday (Oct 22) addressed to Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh.

“Please accept my deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and to all those whose lives and livelihoods have been affected,” he said in the letter.

“Singapore stands ready to support Vietnam in whatever way we can.”
