Vietnam and Canada Promote Cooperation on Judicial Reform
During the meeting, Tran Sy Thanh highly appreciated the efforts of Ambassador Jim Nickel and the Embassy of Canada in Vietnam in promoting cooperative relations among ministries, sectors, localities, and business communities of the two countries in recent years.
Tran Sy Thanh expressed satisfaction with the strong development of Vietnam-Canada relations. Notable achievements include the regular and effective maintenance of high-level exchanges and delegation visits; rapidly growing bilateral trade, which reached USD 8.6 billion in 2025; active implementation of defense and security cooperation; and increasingly substantive cooperation in science and technology, as well as education and training.

Affirming that Vietnam highly values Canada's role and position as one of its leading important partners, Tran Sy Thanh emphasized that the two countries share many common interests and possess significant potential to further expand mutually beneficial cooperation. He also highly appreciated the practical support and assistance provided by the Canadian Government to Vietnam's development process.
On this occasion, Tran Sy Thanh thanked the Canadian Government and proposed that it continue to pay attention to, support, and share experiences with Vietnam in reforming the judicial system, improving the legal and institutional framework, and preventing and combating corruption.
Ambassador Jim Nickel congratulated Vietnam on the success of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and highly praised the Party's strategic decisions and determination in policymaking and the country's socio-economic development in the new era.
The Canadian Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam is Canada's key partner in ASEAN. According to Ambassador Jim Nickel, the two countries have built a strong foundation for cooperation and still have considerable potential and room to expand and elevate bilateral cooperation, particularly as Vietnam serves as Chair of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) Commission in 2026 and will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum in 2027.

On that basis, Ambassador Jim Nickel expressed Canada's desire to further strengthen and expand cooperation with Vietnam in such areas as ensuring sustainable supply chains, food security, energy security, climate change response, law enforcement, and coordination between the two countries at international forums.
