President vows to fulfil responsibilities as a representative of the people

President Nguyen Xuan Phuc has pledged to comply with regulation and fulfill responsibilities of a representative of the people, while sticking with voters and listening to their aspirations.

The State leader and other candidates running for seats in the 15th National Assembly (NA) of Ho Chi Minh City’s constituency No. 10 met with voters in some communes of Cu Chi District on May 9.

Delivering his action plan, President Phuc affirmed that if selected he would work hard to promote the resolution of the people’s proposals and quickly respond to voters within the prescribed time, especially regarding social life, transport infrastructure, urban and environmental issues, thus promptly reporting those issues to the legislature and competent agencies.

With Cu Chi being a revolutionary land, the Party and State will pay great attention to ensuring welfare and social security for people there, the leader said, asserting his constant care for policy beneficial families, the poor, the vulnerable and those living in difficult circumstances.

In the action programme, he also touched upon the issue of asking the authorities of HCM City and Cu Chi District to exploit their vast land fund, use land effectively, develop the model of high-tech agriculture combined with services, and implement policies to attract talents, call for investment, and increase income for locals, according to NDO.

National Assembly candidates meet voters in Hoa Binh, Lao Cai

Politburo member and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Organisation Commission Truong Thi Mai joined candidates running for seats in the 15th National Assembly (2021-2026 tenure) meeting with voters in constituency No. 2 of the northern mountainous province of Hoa Binh on May 10.

To ensure safety in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting was held virtually with more than 700 voters from 26 locations in the three districts of Lac Thuy, Kim Boi, Cao Phong.

At the meeting, voters listened to brief biographies of the candidates and their plans of action.

On behalf of the candidates, Politburo member Mai pledged that, if selected, she would work hard alongside the delegation of Hoa Binh’s NA deputies to continue renovating and improving their operational efficiency towards promoting democracy and truly and fully reflecting the aspirations of the people.

With all their abilities, enthusiasm and responsibilities, the elected candidates will strive to deserve the voters’ trust, she affirmed.

Local voters expressed their hope that after being elected, the NA deputies will pay attention to the issues of infrastructure planning and development, urban management, natural resources, and the environment, as well as working to tap into local potential for socio-economic development, improve the quality of education, training and medical services, and preserve and promote the cultural values of ethnic minority communities, as reported by NDO.

Strictly following 5K message would curb local COVID-19 infections: experts

he serious observance of the health ministry’s 5K message would help stop the local transmission of COVID-19 in Vietnam, heard a meeting in Hanoi on May 10.

The 5K message comprises khau trang (face masks), khu khuan (disinfection), khoang cach (distancing), khong tu tap (no gatherings), and khai bao y te (health declarations).

Speaking at the meeting of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Dac Phu, senior advisor at the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, pointed out four current major pandemic clusters in the country - central Da Nang city, northern Yen Bai province, and the K Hospital and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, both in Hanoi, plus a new hotspot in the northern province of Hai Duong.

COVID-19 cases have been reported in 26 cities and provinces, with cases of local transmission standing at 442, he told the meeting.

Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long also warned that Vietnam is on high alert as the coronavirus can spread quickly, according to NDO.

President receives religious dignitaries in Hoc Mon district

President Nguyen Xuan Phuc received dignitaries and monks representing several religions in Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City on May 10 after meeting local voters in the district on the same day.

The State leader acknowledged the efforts of all religious groups to have both a “good life and beautiful religion” which have made significant contributions to promoting the development of Hoc Mon district.

He also expressed his delight at knowing the majority of dignitaries, monks and religious followers have always united and joined hands with local authorities to boost socio-economic development.

The President affirmed that the State of Vietnam always respects the people's right to freedom of belief and religion and this right is protected by law.

The President noted that hostile forces often take advantage of ethnic and religious issues to oppose the Party and State. Therefore, Vietnamese people, whether following a religion or not, must always maintain solidarity and compassion for each other to advance the common cause of the country and people, NDO said.

Vietnam predicted to retain its position as world’s second largest rice export

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has anticipated that Vietnam would maintain its position as the world’s second biggest rice exporter this year. According to the department, Vietnam will export 6.4 million tonnes of rice in 2011, representing a rise of 233,000 tonnes in comparison with the previous year.

India is likely to remain the largest rice exporter in the world, with 15.5 million tonnes rice set to be shipped abroad this year, while Thailand will come third with an estimated export volume of 6.1 million tonnes.

Last year, Vietnam exported 6.15 million tonnes of rice valued at US$ 3.07 billion, down 3.5% in volume but up 9.3% in value year-on-year.

Statistics indicate that over the past four months of this year, the nation shipped 1.89 million tonnes of rice, down 10.8% in volume but up 1.2% in value over the corresponding period last year.

According to the Vietnam Food Association, Vietnam’s rice export structure has shifted towards quality types with higher prices and added values.

In addition, rice farmers and traders are paying greater attention to improving quality, and traceability towards meeting the strict standards of demanding markets such as the EU, the Republic of Korea and the US, according to VOV.
