Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba Marcelino Medina Gonzalez held the sixth political consultation at the deputy foreign ministerial level on March 2 in the form of a videoconference.

Those in attendance also included Vietnamese Ambassador to Cuba Le Thanh Tung, Cuban Ambassador to Vietnam Orlando Nicolas Hernandez, alongside representatives from the two nations' foreign ministries, the VOV reported.

Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son briefed the participants on the domestic situation, including the outstanding results of the 13th National Party Congress, COVID-19 response measures, and efforts to ensure socio economic development and social security.

He affirmed that Vietnam always attaches great importance to and wishes to continue deepening the special traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Cuba.

Deputy FM Marcelino Medina Gonzalez, in turn, informed about the Cuban situation and a range of measures to remove difficulties caused by the embargo and the COVID-19 pandemic, and carry out the updating of socio-economic development models.

Both sides reviewed the areas of bilateral cooperation and discussed measures to further develop a deeper and more comprehensive bilateral relationship in the time ahead.

They agreed to continue to work closely to intensify high-level exchange visits when conditions permit, effectively implement cooperation mechanisms, and strengthen exchanges between ministries, sectors and the business community in an effort to promote trade and investment cooperation in areas such as food security, education, health, science - technology, culture, sports and tourism.

The pair also compared notes on international and regional issues of shared concern and consented to continue their close coordination and mutual support at international organizations and multilateral forums to which Vietnam and Cuba are members.

During phone talks with First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (CPC) Central Committee Raul Castro late last year, Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong said the Vietnamese Party, State and people treasure and want to deepen the special friendship with their Cuban counterparts.

The Vietnamese leader said the special friendship between the two parties and nations is a valuable asset. The Vietnamese Party, State, people and future generations will keep in mind the historical words: “For Viet Nam, Cuba is willing to shed its blood”, he said.

He expressed his sympathy with Cuba over current difficulties and believed that under the leadership of the CPC, led by Castro, the Cuban people will overcome all difficulties and challenges, Viet Nam News said.

Vietnam is willing to stand with Cuba during the process of the Updating of the Cuban Social and Economic Model and share its successes and shortcomings during the process of renewal over the past 35 years, he said.

Vietnam will also spare no effort to surpass difficulties to maintain and develop economic, trade and investment ties with Cuba, especially in the supply of food and cooperation in food production in Cuba, he added.

Having spoken highly of the efficiency of bilateral co-operation mechanisms, such as theoretical workshops between the CPV and the CPC, the Inter-government Cooperation Committee; the political consultation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs and policy dialogues between the two Ministries of National Defence, the Vietnamese leader expressed his hope that the two sides will continue to promote these mechanisms to develop bilateral relations./.
